Ive built a 2.4ghz pentium 4 from odds and sods to plug into the main tv and use it for vedeo streaming ect unfortunatley it’s overheating quite quickly when running anything too intensive, well the cpu is, passing 80’c and eventually crashing, this is late at night with the side panel off so it’s going to melt into the ground during the summer days at this rate 😯 So ive had to clock it down but now it’s just a touch too slow to run anything other than media player. Anywhos….

Probably all anwserd on their site but it’s 404ing for me atm…..
Would it be worth buying some of that Artic Silver and re-appling?
Is it easy and do i need to buy extra stuff to clear the old crap off?
    Anyone tried this?

Im on a budget atm so an upgrade is out of the question (unless youve got some old gear lying around going cheap)

When it overheats and crashes, touch the heatsink. If it’s hot, whatever thermal paste is on the cpu is good enough.
If the heatsink is cold, either it’s not completely screwed/clamped down onto the cpu, or the thermal paste is not enough ( or it could even too much )
I would check and ensure the heatsink is properly down cause even with a poor application of thermal paste it shouldn’t overheat to the point of crashing.

The few times I’ve removed paste and reapplied I’ve just used a bit of kitchen towel and cleaned the top of the cpu with it

    *edit

Scrap that, realising there was no noticable air movement from the fan i removed the fan/ heatsink and the cpu popped out too , the heatsink was too hot to handle so i think the paste is still working, i did notice a major build up of fluff between the fan and the heatsink looking close-up and side-on which i han’t noticed from above. The fan has probably been sucking on years of fluffy matted dead skin and hair.

    Going to clean and retry
