my processoer seems to have gone tits up but in a way I’ve not seen before, the computer seems to start up ok, but the monitor wasn’t switching on, no error beeps, no switching off, it was as if the processor had just given up on the graphics. I reseated my graphics card and tried a different card, etc but nowt seems to work. I have now put in an old processor and it seems to work just fine, any ideas or is it just a fooked processor?

Ok, this is wierd, I was fiddling with my clock settings and adjusted my old 2.4 ghz processor up to 150 mhz and it was fine, so I tried it at 175 and it repeated the same thing that the 3.oghz processor did, so I swapped back the 3.0ghz processor and it works again, although at 2.6 ghz as it was set at 175 mhz. This is wierding me out as I just have no idea what the problem is! Also, the CPU at lower than normal speeds is running at 63 degrees at idle! This was the initial problem that my CPU was overheating!

Make sure your heat sink and fan are seated correctly. You make also may need clean the old thermal paste off the CPU/Heatsink with an alcohol cleaner and re apply thermal paste.

Your processor should definetely be running at 63 degees at idle. Unless you’ve overclocked the nuts out of it.

reapplied paste every time mate, it’s socket 478 so heatcink is well seated. I know it shouldn’t be, I’m ot overclocking it, but I think the temp readings might be wrong TBH

is that reading from the bios?

try coretemp or some other 3rd party temp reader, probably best to try a couple

    good luck

one more week to go to my new build…gonna clock the nuts off it 😀
tempted by the duo 8400 at 3.0 and clock it to 3.8 or over, but will probably get the quad 6600 @ 2.4 and try for 3.4, mind you most games are gpu dependant now, so anything above 3.2 show little gains….gtx or ati x2 hmmm decisions 😀
