I’ve setup a second PC to our main telley and hooked up a network, alls well and good but it’d be nice to take control of it from the main PC sometimes (im a lazy bastage). Ive done this before a long time ago but can’t remember the program, any recomendations?

Oh and any Lan games you’d recommend so the missus can cheat and kick my ass? Her words btw

Ohh and finally, have any of you used Windows Media Center and would you recommend it?

Depends what the capabilities of your media pc are.

There is a free media centre program that looks just like the ms one.

Also if your like me and dont use a tv tuner card or the hdd for recording and so on then I just put on win xp lite and hte codecs and so on and it flies.

its a P4 3ghz and boots from cold in 15 seconds 🙂 even quicker from hibernate.

Runs very fast and all the rubbish is taken out of windows.

still I get average cpu usage of 80% when playing 720p videos!

Ta mugs, do you remote desktop? and can you plays games (older non cpu intensive) and web browse? (nevermind just googled it)

    XP for the moment
2.4mhz P4 clocked down to 1.9mhz due it heat issues
    6600 nivdia agp
    80g sata hdd
    1g ram ect

Nothing amazing but with a plethora of codecs it runs video perfectly well, if i can get hold of Doom 1 or 2 or something more modern it’d be a laugh over lan, any recomendations appreciated.

Depending on what OS you are running you could just try windows remote desktop, set this up via Control Panel-System-Remote on the media PC, and on the other PC run MSTSC from the run command
Or for programs I like http://www.realvnc.com, they have a freeware version which works great

To remind myself and possibly help others who may have the same question at some point….

I stumbled across a program called TightVNC based on an open source VNC project (it’s free, which is always nice.) It’s not perfect but is quite functional and prevents the Stand-up/ Walk too second computer/ Sit-down/ CLICK…CLICK/ Stand-up/ Walk Back/ Sit-down it basically transmits the other desktop across the network but not the more advanced programs like games or video being played…ect….ect…. which is fine.
It’s free and it means i don’t have to move the drink/ cigs around, result!

A laugh of a 2 player LAN game wouldn’t go amis though, im actually thinking of installing BF1942 and knifing the GF on Gazla, would that me wrong?

Ahh you posted whilst i typed.
I looked into Windows Remote Desktop first and found that i couldn’t run it fully due to not having XP Pro and so i had to go 3rd party, you’ve posted a link to another VNC dirivitive (spolling?) which i’ll look into if TightVNC goes tits up.

we have 1 main pc at home which runs remote desktops to the various laptops scattered around the house which works a treat. and we only have to back up the main pc and not worry about the client machines.

if you dont have remote desktop available then use http://www.logmein.com – i use this to manage about 20 PCs (friends and family who cant stop pressing buttons) and access my work / home pc when i forget to do stuff.

very quick even across the internet and FREE – as it happens we have a laptop connected to the tv with vista and use that as a media PC. I down load torrents and BBC i-player (i love this baby) remotely from work so i can watch them when i get in

Yeah i did install logmein late last night mag but figured it’s a touch over the top for a local network, i might well use it for certain click happy friends PC support. I too am likeing BBC iplayer and 4od.

Ohh and i did setup a Battlefield1942 lan game and it works a treat, im going to kick her arse tonight 😀
