I have obviously died and been resurrected in some alternate reality.
Everyone saying how fantastic RtR was and how rubbish Secret Weapons was?

RtR was okay, but nothing special and far too small to hold people’s interest for more than a few weeks. Months after it had been released and people had played it to death everyone turned against it. Of the six maps, a couple were pretty poorly designed and the new toys included planes that were far too powerful and fast for the small maps.

SWWW2 was on the other hand a much better expansion – more maps (8 instead of 6), which were more varied and larger (not so much “out of bounds” areas), including night maps. It had the new “objective” game mode, some neat additions (such as throwing knives) and the infamous “secret weapons” themselves that were in general implemented well and didn’t unbalance the game. Not to mention the cool motorbike and side car. They even added another free SWWW2 map later (Raid on Agheila) which was one of the best additional maps they came up with.
I much preferred SWWW2 and thought it far superior to RtR – I still do.

Unfortunately, because many people had been soured by the RtR experience, they never bothered with the second expansion, which was a great shame, especially as not long afterwards DICE implemented the ability to run mixed game types (and mods) on a single BF1942 map cycle – something badly missing when RtR was released.
As I said though, even with this cool feature most servers didn’t run SWWW2 maps because there were always a few people in every clan who never bought it.

Lol thats the way i remember it. RtR was universally despised (except by magicker who was always wanting it on the server. 😆 ). The XDC patented industrial strength, bin-lid sized rose-tinted spectacles are obviously doing the rounds at the moment.

But if we are going to wallow in nostalgia let me just say imho the most underrated battlefield expansion was of course Armoured Fury for BF2 which sadly only about 5 people in XDC bought. It rocked 😀 😥

it is simply the case that they have opened their eyes and see the light

rtr maps were fantastic there was only bay town which was a steaming pile of shite but the other 5 were great maps especially for teamwork – the planes were nuts to be fair but that have been cut right back in the latest patches.

i dont mind sw either but as the whole point was to play with xdc types and not many bought it and it never really got much of a run on our server at the time

i would love a sw night as well

some of the sw planes were a joke and moved so fast you could not actually fly the stupid things

objective based games were great though

operation telemark was a great map, can’t remember was ex-pack that was in……….also operation husky or summat was a real challenge, i may need to install the ex-packs too as i’ve been playing a lot of 42 recently, found a great server that has battle of Britain on 24/7 and another which is just for flyboys so its mainly coral sea and battle of Britain and of course not forgetting El Alamein. 😉

sw and rtr where both good…. pain in the arse that people get stuck in their vanilla ways and didnt give them enough chance. The planes in RTR where a fucking joke though… EA flyboys struck again!

Blackadder the only problem i had with RtR was the airpower unbalance but as a mod i quite liked it, i guess by the time SW was out i was tireing of EA & bf1942 vanilla and fully hooked on the faster pace of Desert Combat.

This thread has reminded me of some of the good qualties within SW, i did like Telemark and the objective maps but…rocket packs? uncontrolable jets Shermans with rocket launchers just didnt appeal to me, and ofcourse the lack of servers, but then what do i know…..i always liked playing Corel Sea 😳

Meh, i might load it up again just for the hell of it, i seem to be going through a retro phase.

Was it really back in 2002 that we started playing this cursed game 😕
