Old man has a lap top… says that it has slowed down considerably this month.
Im doing a virus/spyware scan tonight… whatelse should I consider?
43 processes running.
July 6, 2006 at 9:36 pm #28962TurksMeisterParticipantOh… and he uses norton antivirus – is there anyway to set it to scan at a certain time… havent used it before, and cant seem to see a way
cheers
July 6, 2006 at 10:17 pm #28963sebgrosParticipant43 processes is far too much 30-35 would be more appropriate for a normal old man s pc…
1-defrag.
2-regcleaner –> to clean reg
3-tune XP 1.5 –> to optimize
4-bootvis from MS to start quickernorton is great in my opinion but it s like hanging a caravan to your mini… a real slow down (you have to do with it tho :/ )
July 6, 2006 at 11:27 pm #28964TurksMeisterParticipantok we have no viruses!
Ive pissed about with the regisrty of my pc before, and it wasnt pretty – is regcleaner streight forward?
July 7, 2006 at 12:18 am #28965sebgrosParticipantit is if you use the automatic reg cleaning from the tools menu (maybe not the exact term but you ll find it)
then relaunch it and clean the useless stuffs from the start up menu with it, you can always do a backup if sthg is fucked up

Whats the size of the hard disk and how much free space is there? Have you run a defrag recently?
How much memory is he packing?
July 7, 2006 at 11:06 am #28967xdc the docParticipantDont bugger about – reformatting is usually the only cure.
If you really dont wanna do that the above suggestions sound cool – but Regcleaner aint 100% safe – yoiu need to make a backup b4 you use it… and the last time i tried to tell you how to back up your registry you mucked it up!
July 7, 2006 at 11:28 am #28968XDCMcQueenParticipantLMFAO @ Norton….. may as well ave nowt on…….
Bet if you put the FREE version of AVG on there it will pickup on virus`s that Norton doesnt even know is there.
July 7, 2006 at 12:36 pm #28969TurksMeisterParticipantHe has a 40gb hd (laptop innit) that has 2 partitions… one for data and the other for everything else… (I think data include my documents and things… not entriely sure…) what I did notice is that one of the partitions (ummm I think its a partition… how do you tell a partition from a seperate hd?) has only 6gb left… could this be it?
July 7, 2006 at 3:16 pm #28970sebgrosParticipantthe partition is viewed by the comp as an hdd when u browse it but it s not always one, on a lap top you usually have 1 HDD anyway…
I dont think the 6 Gb left are the issue…
was the comp faster before ? what is now different?July 7, 2006 at 4:26 pm #28971TurksMeisterParticipantUmmm yes much faster, he says it has slowed down quite a bit in the last monnth, and all that he has done is played around with photos…
Basically opening progs is a slooooow process – It just took 8 seconds to open internet explorer!
July 7, 2006 at 4:35 pm #28972XDC DutchmanParticipantTurks, what you need to do is find out why it’s taking this long to open programs:
You never mentioned what OS the laptop is running, but do the followingOpen up Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC)
Now go to the performance tab and take note of the Physical Memory. What is the total, available and system cache values ?
If the available memory is very low, then the systems starts to use the paging file to swopout memory
Also, under the Commit Charge, what is the Total, Limit and Peak hereNow also underneath here, check what the CPU usage % is. If this is high, then go to the Process Tab, click on the CPU column to order this from highest to lowest, and check what processes are running high and using up resources.
It sounds like this system is either very low on memory or something is hogging the CPU, so best to start here before looking at anything else really
July 7, 2006 at 4:42 pm #28973TurksMeisterParticipantcan someone link me the right regcleaner – there are loads out there, and i dont want to fuck this up… the old man is stressed enough as it is!!
July 7, 2006 at 5:12 pm #28974sebgrosParticipantlol, I got an old computer stressed man as well at home 😀
http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Utilitaire/nettoyeurs_et_installeurs/fiches/4894.html
then click on the blue tab called telechargerJuly 7, 2006 at 6:13 pm #28975TurksMeisterParticipantSo… to work reg clean… you have to delete the files that you dont need/have deleted in the past… it not being my laptop, and my old man not having a clue, this will be rather longwinded!!
How much of the crap that comes with an acer laptop do you actually need? Ive got launche managers, pointing devices, and ac power adapter icons coming out of my ears!
Im in way over my head… and its fucking boring too!
