the fact is you shd sit down for a while and truy to google every process to find info ans to see if they are compuslory or not.

    simple example:
alg.exe is a compulsory process since sp1 for XP , dont remove it
nerocheck.exe is a crap from nero taht does not need to load at start up at all.. the prog still works great but no need of that in background
    ….

a good site is liutilities… dont search for it but write any process in google and it s usualy in the five 1st replies of google, then you can see if it s an important process, a useless one or even a spyware…

it s a long job, but it really can pay.
    good luck m8

I’d still do a defrag on the partition that has windows on it…

I got rid of Norton, and installed AVG, still a bit slow though – think I will do a Hijack this thing at some point.

Do a hijackthis and post the log, it’ll give everyone a chance to identify the culprits running at startup that shouldn’t

And I hate quoting people, but you might want to consider:

Turks, what you need to do is find out why it’s taking this long to open programs:
You never mentioned what OS the laptop is running, but do the following

    Open up Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC)

Now go to the performance tab and take note of the Physical Memory. What is the total, available and system cache values ?
If the available memory is very low, then the systems starts to use the paging file to swopout memory
Also, under the Commit Charge, what is the Total, Limit and Peak here

Now also underneath here, check what the CPU usage % is. If this is high, then go to the Process Tab, click on the CPU column to order this from highest to lowest, and check what processes are running high and using up resources.

It sounds like this system is either very low on memory or something is hogging the CPU, so best to start here before looking at anything else really

Bah be a man and do a fresh install 😕 😀

I’ve been putting off doing one on my computer for ages but with constant crashes i’m pulling together everything and making backups ready for the big day. You’ll know when i’ve done as i won’t be aroung for 3 weeks or so as i am guaranteed to muck it up 8)

Get a copy of Ghost, a big hard drive and make lots of Ghost images as you install the different drivers. That way when you stuff up the install you can go back to the last good image and not have the hassle of reinstalling the whole OS.
