I was considering moving onto a suzuki GZ 125 marauder, any of you guys ridden one of these? Spoke to a mechanic when i was having my current 125 fixed up and he said was quite a nice bike and durable, unlike the new Honda CG 125’s which r now produced over in brazil.
any feedback much appreciated 🙂
June 7, 2007 at 8:18 am #53193BadgerParticipantWhat do you need it for Ryz? If you want a run around I wouldn’t buy a low powered cruiser such as that. Have you passed your test long/ are you restricted for the moment? AlsHave you had a test ride?

Basically mate, the 125 iv got atm is automatic and i use it for commuting and getting around at least 3-4 times a day so i clock a fair few mileage on my current one, but i did my manual CBT, and passed that so i can move up onto geared bikes – im restricted to 33 bhp (more than enough) but only the CC of 125 (maximum), and iv never test ridden a Marauder myself mate, but i have been on a few hondas (and a cheap chinese sport replica) 🙂
June 7, 2007 at 11:26 am #53196AnonymousParticipantI was going to buy a Marauder or maybe an Intruder about 6 or 7 years ago lol but it would have been a waste of time – too little grunt. After having 2 XR125’s stolen and many theft attempts I’d steer clear of 125’s altogether – their battery is usually too small to cope with the drain of an alarm and they’re too easy to steal, not to mention painfully slow 😛 The only thing I miss about having a 125 is fuel economy and strangely cheap insurance. I used to get 90mpg on my XR125 – they’re naturally more fuel efficient but It would have helped I never used to ride like a crazy fool back then. I get about 30-40mpg on my Duke II 640 which I guess is not too shabby, but that’s with wringing it’s neck and sliding the back end all over the place, plus it’s still small and nimble enough to filter through extreme traffic but big enough to put a smile on your face and take an alarm.
Why didn’t you do your unrestricted test? Afraid of the big boys? 😛 I’d have to say if I was restricted to 33bhp I’d have gone for something like a Honda CBF250 and got a top box fitted. Will cost you about £3k new but has a nicer amount of power to it compared to a 125 (but it’s still a pansy bike) and it’s practical and not entirely unattractive either.

To do the de resticted test you have to be 21, as im 18 i can only do the A1 (i think) restricted, then i can move onto doing my DAS – thats why i need to stick to 125cc atm 🙁 but as i say, I did love the look of the marauder and it probably isnt as grunty as some of the more larger bikes but the style is good, and im willing to fork out about two grand on a bike, so a decent second hand or cheap (if possible) new one would be great – i just couldnt justify much more on a motorbike, my current one cost me 1 and a half grand and its great – reliable, and does plenty of mileage of a full tank (costing a fiver!) – but as i said, time to move up onto biggerbikes and a Marauder seemed like a good choice, im not after anything sport or sport replica, i like cruisers 🙂 its just what iv always wanted – and i no having a 125 kind of pisses on the idea, but there are nice ones out there, the Yamaha Dragstar 125 is a beautiful bike aswell!
*EDIT*
I have also looked at a XR125, on road dirt bike kind of style, another kind of thing im also after.but is it quite forgiving? As i say, i want a bike that isnt too demanding to ride, il get to those later 😛
June 7, 2007 at 11:52 am #53199AnonymousParticipantI think in that case then it may be a waste of time buying a new 125 because it will be upgraded for a bigger bike soon and be worth shit on trade in when you do =/ Is there anything drastically wrong with your current chicken chaser that warrants replacement? You’ll probably be better off financially keeping it untill you get a big bike. I had 3 125’s in the space of a year due to thefts and if I had just not bothered buying the other 2, I could have afforded to pay for my test and bought a big bike sooner =/ I know you will probably fancy a change, heck I was down the garage this week looking to trade in my Duke for something different and I’ve only had it for 4 months, but it isn’t worth taking a hit for a different seating position or a 125 in geenral 😛 Save your pennies, pass the test then get a custom the way they were meant to be – big bore 😛 Do your restricted test and you will be automatically deristrected after 2 years – means you’ll be on a bigger bike when you’re 20 instead of 21 🙂
June 7, 2007 at 12:01 pm #53200RyzoParticipantWish i could wait 3 years! (or 2 :P) lol but to be honest mate, the bike i got now is a 4 stroke, so it sounds good and it drives good – by the style isnt me, i no what u mean though bout wanting to change it over – only had the bike for 2-3 months and alrdy wnting to change, to be fair – i shldnt of got the one i have now, instead waited, did my geared, (which i did couple months after buying the automatic), then bought a Suzuki, but meh! And yeah, sure the positions a bit different, but i hear the marauders pack quite a punch too 😀 im trying to find the best way to sell the current bike iv got now, its the first one of its kind to be bought – and probably the only decent import bike iv rode! I have been on a few chinese important 125 sport replicas aswell, and…errr its a death trap, the suspension feels like its going to break, the clutch is stiff and the gear shifters always rdy to fall off!
June 7, 2007 at 12:15 pm #53201AnonymousParticipantJust noticed your edit – the XR125 was ok to ride I guess, but the problem is every dodgy thieving bastard likes them too =/ An offroad-style bike is good fun but not worth the hassle you’ll get from cretins, plus it will probably only ever go offroad when it gets stolen. That lesson cost me about £5-6k =/
Why not to the restricted test and get a <33bhp bike then? You can pick up a 2nd hand Honda CMX250 for under a grand and pay for the restricted test with the change 🙂 Same custom styling you're after, but with more grunt than those Marauders and with Honda reliabity and an upgraded licence? The restricted test + CXM250 will probably cost you what you're going to end up paying for a Marauder 125 on it's own.

June 7, 2007 at 2:46 pm #53203RyzoParticipantThe main reason i cant really do that is because i had had much experience just yet driving with a geared bike, thats why i want to get one to take around before i deicde to do my restricted test, wantr a feel for it to make sure i get a good feel for it first – before diving straight into my restricted test – i guess what im asking for is to know if theres any nice cruiser type 125’s out there, i love the look of the CMX250 but obviously wldnt be able to legally drive at the 250cc its at, i mean – do you know of any reliable 125s that i cld ride to get used to driving a manual?
June 7, 2007 at 3:18 pm #53204AnonymousParticipantYou can spend £2k on a 125 to learn to ride a manual then £2k on lessons and test and a bigger manual (£4k) or can just spend £2k on lessons and test and learn a manual whilst on the lessons then get a bigger manual and save £2k. It should be a no-brainer which would be the better option 😛 One of the lads I rode with on a lesson had never rode a bike before in his life untill he did his lessons, he passed his test after only riding a manual for a handful of hours in his life and went straight to a big bike. If you’ve handled a manual np in your CBT then you’re not going to have a problem in the lessons for the test – remember the instructor is there to help ;o
