I’ve been getting the competitive itch again for TF2, and was curious about these games you may have heard of called Pickups. I thought they were maybe a handy way to arrange a clan match at short notice, via an IRC channel, but that’s not quite right. They’re not specifically orientated towards clans, though a lot of people playing in them are themselves involved in competitive leagues etc, but Pickups allow you to play alongside these more serious types in a match format where clan affiliations are temporarily put aside. Basically what you do is join the server provider’s IRC channel, and via the channel you can add yourself to a game. The best provider I’ve seen so far is Multiplay, who run 5 pickup servers, with sourceTV on each one as well so you can watch the game live and see what’s expected.
With Multiplay you need to be authed in IRC, then you join #mpuktf2.pickup. In the channel you type !add which instructs the pickup bot to assign you to one of the two teams which are setup using the standard 6v6 format. Typing !med adds you as a medic to one of the teams (if available) but there is only one medic spot available. You’ll then be able to join a server, where you wait for others to join, and once filled, off you go.

Not so much with the skill involved with shooting etc, but the movement is different, and the options available to you are much more varied when you play with a team medic. I’m a bit nervous about joining one of these right now, so I’m going to watch a few more before taking the plunge, but certainly I could see this changing the way I play TF2 in future. If anyone else has a go, let me know how you get on!
Incidently, Multiplay also run Pickups for COD4 as well.
Anyone here interested in learning this side of the game with me? I’m really getting fed up with the 32 man servers out there these days as they just feel far too spammy, and with that many players you’re just constantly running into each others brick wall. I still like the smaller servers out there, but at the 6v6 level you really see a game and teamwork. The pickups are like a step between public servers and matches, and are definitely not as hardcore as I first thought. It appears that the real hardcore players view pickups as a bit of a fun distraction for a laugh, but for the likes of us, they’re definitely a step up from what we’re used to.
If anyone is interested, let me know because it’d be a lot easier to learn with someone else at the same level as myself, than rely on my own interpretation of a game.

Is anyone else up for this? I might actually be persuaded to put my han d in me pocket for orange box if people would play in this kind of game (which does sound interesting.)

Should arrive tues/wed. Actually looking forward to 2nd part of hl2 as well… scant go wrong. just pissed off it still costs 13 quid after all this time.
