Since we’re riding a wave of activity atm, I was wondering how viable it would be to get us a server for BC2/Vietnam? Every night this week we’ve had at least 4 people playing, with 8 or 9 playing at the weekend, and if we could fill a server even a couple of times a week, it would go a long way to putting XDC on the path to long term recovery. The problem of course is people’s patience, and whether there’s enough motivation to make something like this work, and so I want to throw the idea out there to gauge opinion.
I’m starting a new job the week after next which is going to free up some cash, and would certainly make this affordable to support in the short term by myself, so I’m not asking for help at this stage with the finances. Initially I’m thinking of taking a single months lease on a server with Multiplay, debranding it, and seeing how that works out before deciding on any long term investment.
So, first of all I want to know who would be willing to help out with filling the server? Second I’d like an opinion on how many slots we should go for, should there be enough support for the idea. The pricing is straightforward for a short term 1 month lease, costing £1 a slot, and £3 covers the debranding, so that 32 players would cost £35. There is discount for longer term contracts, but I’m not worrying about that at this stage. I’m willing to gamble this amount as a test, and if it doesn’t work out, I don’t mind taking the hit for trying.
Server settings will be enough of a headache to sort out amongst XDC, and both Rats and Hussars seem to prefer Hardcore.
With our own control of it, we can make a decision depending on who’s about.
Oh and when are you going to join us again Turks? Not seen you about since before Christmas?
The other reason, I forgot to mention, regarding why we should get our own server is the long term aim of adding to XDC. We need to get ourselves out there a bit and find some new PC members. Plenty of good people we’re yet to meet online.
And Hardcore’s alright Paddy, but it just feels a bit limiting. I’ve always been one to go with everything a game has to offer and don’t get annoyed by silly things like spotting or kill cam. I’m of the opinion they add more to the game than they take away.
b ut it’s so much more satisfying and skillful to get a direct hit on a chopper without the crosshairs, it’s just more fun IMHO. I don’t mind not playing hardcore, but HC is where it’s at!
lol yea that shot the other night was one of the best moments I’ve ever had in a game. Just a shame Ben was called a noob after it by his passenger. It had nothing to do with his flying, just awesome luck on my end 🙂

GF of 2.5 years broke up with me last weekend so might have some more time on my hands! However, am completely addicted to Dragon Age, and DA 2 coming out in March… aint got time for BF and its buggyness! Might give it another go some time in the next few weeks or so 🙂

Killing wolf in BFBC2 is both easy and satisfying – so may be worth a punt for helping you recover.
Stalker was playing a lot of that Dragon Age over Christmas and said it was really good, so I guess no worries Turks, at least it’s better than some console shite. About your BC2 bugginess thing though, I came across a thread on another forum the other day and was trying to remember if someone in XDC was having regular connection problems in the game, and I thought it might have been you? If that’s the problem, try disabling upnp on your router as it causes problems from some routers. BC2 is really not that buggy btw, except maybe the friends system.
