Divie
Participantok so not only do I have to deal with the random disconnects from the ea server but now also my router is deciding to block seemingly random ports every 10 or so minutes, msn, firefox, all internet games and all chat prgs EXCEPT for some reason icq then cannot connect for between 5-10mins, the msn repair option tells me that the dns and key ports are failing but nothing gets done, I am using an ethernet connection to a belkin wireless g router which has served me (and a cpl of other comps using the wireless connection) fine untill beginning of this week, as well as that every 10-15 mins or so the router’s “online” light switches off, have contacted isp (bt) and they say i should be receiving normal service so ummm can anyone help? 🙁

ParticipantHave you checked your routers log to see what exactly is happening every 10 mins or so.
I have a similar problem at the moment, but I know what is wrong with mine and dont want to assume yours is the same, but does this happen throughout the day or just in the eveningsmorning? Have you checked your settings and noise margin, post what your router is stating, ie, connection speed (5248 kbps), line attenuation (45 dbs) and Noise Margin (3 db) the bracketed ones are mine at the moment.
If you post some of the details from your router maybe we can see what is happening.
🙂

ParticipantHey seedubs thx for the reply, bearing in mind that i really am a div (esp on highly sophistimicated doowhackies such as routers 😮 ), how do i find these readouts 😳

ParticipantNormally your settings are sort of on a web page, not sure how your router is set up, but I think the default page is something like this (mine is a Netgear):
Copy that into your browser and you ‘might’ get your router homepage, if it needs a log in and password they tend to be defaulted to ‘Admin’ and password. If not then you may have to look in whatever manuals you have for your belkin.

Participanthmm ok the room i keep all manuals and boxes in is currently occupied by an unconscious and highly unstable welshman (early casualty of student union pound a pint night!) so miiiiight just leave that till tomorrow!

ParticipantIf it’s Belkin kit, that is normally set to:
Try that.
BTW, if you have never used this before, it means your router & connection are wide open to the world. The first thing you should do is at least set a password on the administration section of the router.

JESUS!!!!
Noise margin 3db…..THATS your problem m8,If you have a noise margin lower that 10db then your gonna get lots of random disconnects. The problem you have got is that your line wont support the speed youve got {have u got 8 mb broadband?}.You should renew all your inernal wiring and if that doesnt make the noise margin greater then you will have to get your ISP to start capping your line ,first a say 5mb then see if the margin goes up if not cap it at 4 mb and so on.
This is what i had to do.I got 8mb BB but was connecting at 6mb but it would keep disconnecting and it got worse at night!i ended up getting capped at 3mb thus giving me a 15db noise margin
