It’s getting to that time of year again where I start thinking about upgrading my system. Nothing too extravagant, but in this case I’m thinking about moving from socket A to 939.
Which of the AMD 939 chips is best for overclocking? I’m looking to spend around £110 (inc VAT) for the OEM CPU, and want something that I can speed up a bit without too much hassle.There pritty much all as good for overclocking,But u will only beable to do it via the FSB as the multiplier is locked on all AMD cpu`s apart from the FX series but u will pay alot more money for them.
From what ive been reading the Optron cpus overclock alot more than the Athlon and X2 chips.
Shame you didnt say a week ago m8 as i sold my FX55 (1 month old ) for 200 quid 🙁
Thanks McQueen, I’ve been looking at the new Opteron chips. I’m not too worried about cranking a 2.0 Ghz chip up to 3.0 Ghz, but I like to make my money go as far as I can. 😉
As for the FX55 you sold, well I probably wouldn’t have been able to buy it then. Too much money going out and not enough coming in 😉
But let me know if you if anything that might be suitable comes in.
from what I ve read if you are really into o/c, then you got more MHz to gain from a 3200+ than a 4000+ cause the potential gain of power is bigger… but it s must be easier to make a “small o/c” of a bigger cpu…
me points at 3700+ and 4000+ cause they got 1Mb cache rather than 512 on a lot of other chips…
on the other hand the 3800 dual core is @ a good price for dual core and can be o/ced to sthg really cool like a 4400 or more…
then it depends what MB you want and the chipset on it…..
i have a 4400 x2 and had a quick play with whaking the fsb to 250 mhz and it still booted!!!
was quite amazed
but at present quiet fans are the call of the moment

I was reading that t’other day. Pretty impressive, although I don’t see that Intel will let folks get away with doing that for too long. I was wondering if I should change my alliegiance back to Intel in this one instance…
got me 2gig 3200 up to 2.5 stable, can get 2.7 but slightly unstable 😉
running memory on a divder, but no performance loss (crap memory aswell), an extra .025 volts was needed mind.25% overclock 😀 most 3200 should do quite well
to be honest for less than £100 there good value, but bear in mind that intel are releasing their Conroe chip, which is ment to something special.
Yes I know a guy who works on the Chip Design for Intel. He says that the entry model Conroe with give you a 20-40% increase over the AMD FX-62 due for release soon. Core entry model prices are expected to be around the $200 mark.
