True, but its not such a problem as it once was, most people have pretty big drives these days and SD Memory etc is pretty cheap. I have 2 Gig of SD for the camera and about 400 Gig of space and I have plenty of space left.
Besides, I only use RAW when I think I am going to need to adjust the picture quite alot, low light environments etc, or for images that I am actually trying to capture, rather than just out pointing and shooting.
It is diffcult to remove the lines as each picture has been taken and the exposure automatically calculated each time and therefore slightly different depending upon the available light, the way around it I think would to take the picture in manual mode with a facility called exposure lock, but most point and shoot cameras will not have this facility…
But not sure which camera you have, but alternatively shoot in RAW and then balance them out afterwards?? I dare not post………

What you need to do is as follows, I have CS2 mind you so not sure if it will be the same,
Simply go to ‘Image’ ‘Adjustments’ and click ‘auto levels’ or if you are feeling confident choose ‘levels’ and manually adjust them.
Then to reduce the noise (grain) you need this little program (neat Image):

Its fairly easy to use, open the picture, use the default settings, it looks at your picture and reduces the noise and saves it under a different name.
Also always save your pictures under a new name, so if you mess up you have the original still.
(One more thing, if your camera has it (which I doubt) shoot in RAW mode as you can adjust the exposure and settings better afterwards)

Free? GIMP is probably the best, although I use PS2 (but it is expensive…)
