Participant….but its worth pointing out that its not very often anyone gets warned or kicked first. The reason is that then someone has to keep track of the offender to carry out the threat, and that just kills the game for the admin.
So, if someone does a ban, it’s just done there and then. It’s not like we’re short of players.
The other day I banned a guy [DCG] TankJohnson as he and his buddy were just shooting each other’s vehicles and repairing them to stat pad. I said don’t do it. They carried on. Ban. No threats by me.
I think most admins are the same. It’s nothing personal – just trying to keep a good game going without wasting time being a detective 🙂

ParticipantOK, mate, I’ve taken the liberty of unbanning you since Pharty has a proper job and may not be able to do this during the day. I’m hoping to not piss off whoever it was that did ban you.
Now don’t be a naughty boy again, or Turks will send you some of his toe-cheese. Beleive me, if you’ve seen photos of his feet, that is a sickening threat indeed…. 🙂

Downside of you putting the pic on the site is that our lass took one look at your son and declared,”I want another one”!
Yeah – my wife said the same too 🙁
Mind you, when I picked up her copy of Red/Vogue/whatever, and pointed to a picture of sleek young woman wearing a wedding dress, I said the same thing to her.
That’s why I’ve not got a large bruise on the side of my head…..
(Congrats again Max).

It’s all a con, I tell ya….

ParticipantGlad the rollback worked.
I’ve been using and abusing PC’s since pre-Windows 3.0 days both as a hobby and professionally and I have never had to reinstall the OS and everything else due to some odd behaviour somewhere.
It really is the first resort of tech support people that just can’t be arsed to think a problem through and investigate what is really happening.
Windows is made up of literally thousands of components – when one or two get screwed for whatever reason they can be replaced. Not always trivially, but you don’t need to wipe your disk & start again.
The problem with that approach is that if you never understood the cause of the problem then you cannot be sure you won’t just get it again.
I once had a stand-up argument with a support bloke that was supposed to administer our systems. One of my guys PC’s just showed odd behaviour – forget the details – that was stopping him working properly. Support bloke’s instruction was to “reformat and reinstall” – but for a software developer’s PC with all the tools, environment, etc, let alone things like email, this is a 1-2 day job at least, plus the lost work. He could not explain why this would fix the problem. In his mind it just made it go away so he could go back to browsing the web. It turned out that one file needed fixing – a 60 minute investigation and a 5 minute fix. Grrrr 😡
🙂 Of course, if ever a posting had “Famous Last Words” written all over it!! 😛

ParticipantSincere congratulations. Now ask for a payrise – you’ve got a family to support 🙂

ParticipantI thought it was one of Old Phart’s home videos 😆

ParticipantWell done & good luck.
Also explains why you were on the server at 11pm last night – while the wife’s away….. 😛

ParticipantThanks guys. For the moment I don’t intend connecting the PC to the internet. When he wants to do CBeebies (and yes, excellent stuff there) he can do that on my PC or the missus’ laptop.
I’ll look at the Thomas and Bob progs.

ParticipantHave you tried logging on to the router to see if it has any logs or status info that makes sense?
Just point your web browser at it – Belkins are normall http://192.168.2.1, I think (mine is).
Something that can be the cause of very slow speeds is not having an ADSL filter installed properly on your phone. This would not explain the disconnects, though. But worthwhile checking anyway.
I’m not sure I would beleive the Wireless Monitor – try switching to use Window’s zero config option.
If you can, try plugging your PC straight into the router and see if that helps. It will at least let you narrow down if it the wireless part that is broken.
If you do a scan for wireless networks, do you get more than yours listed? If so, try reconfiguring the wireless channel number that your Belkin uses so it is at least 5 away from the nearest contender.

ParticipantI had a phone call from my brother yesterday asking if Vista could be installed over XP or if it was a start-from-scratch job. I asked him why he was considering upgrading a perfectly working system, and he said because his daughters thought the new cascading windows (or whatever) looked really cool and they just had to have it.
What’s a techie nerd to do in the face of fashion…. 🙄

ParticipantIt’s not just bandwith that gets limited, but it is latency (ping times) that get screwed too, and not by personal profile shaping.
That’s what Tiscali did to me. Peak times (evenings) my ping used to go 100-150 compared to 30-40 during the rest of the day. It absolutely kills online gaming. But the turned it on for whole swathes of their network – nothing to do with personal profile shaping.

ParticipantNothing scarier than taking your wee man to the hospital for something unknown. Hope it works out – did for my boy a few weeks back.
