ParticipantCheers for the advice guys, particularly the Sprog and the Judge, who I think have shamed the rest of you with their computer knowedges.
My logic behind XP was that I might as well settle on an OS that I’d use for the next few years now, however I had a chat with a friend of mine who has given me an old XP license so I should be able to use that in the meantime and activate updates.
Cheers for the offers of *ahem* special software that may help. Your feedback has been most helpful, and I wasn’t going to take the Vista leap lightly (I normally wait until there’s been at least 1 service pack before jumping ship).
Incidentally, last night the wife asked me what ‘Halo’ was. She then had about 10 minutes of my overly enthusiastic response, trying to explain who Master Chief was and why the Covenant wanted us dead. She just gave me a blank look and said that we should upgrade my PC so I could play it. Bless her.
But it looks like I’ll be sticking with XP until at least my next rebuild.

ParticipantCheers Signal & Ryzo. Another thing to consider would be 32 or 64 bit?
Trouble is my PC is so out of date I think that half the problems I have are from bizarre hardware conflicts. I used to upgrade my PC every six months, but these days I just don’t have the money.
I might just splurge on a new system and to hell with the debt.

ParticipantWell my ‘LeGit’ copy of XP doesn’t allow me to do automatic updates, which is an awful pain, so I doubt that my current OS is up to speed, which is probably a major contributor to my problems. Alas, now I’m a married man I can’t spend hours online tracking down all the latest patches, so I’m resigned to letting my OS do that for me.
I could buy XP OEM, but I’d rather future proof my system with an OS that’ll be around for the next 3 or 4 years. Any idea when the service pack for Vista will be out?

ParticipantOh, so it’s THAT Fiona Philips that we want dead? I don’t watch GMTV though, so what’s she done to incite the wrath of the Badger?
Actually, as well as the List of Faggots, shouldn’t we also have a ‘revenge list’, so that if any of us come to power we will be able to make them ‘vanish’? And by vanish I mean have killed and then hide the body somewhere where it won’t be found.

ParticipantI merely posted the news as reported by the non-biased, indifferent national broadcaster the BBC. As we all know the BBC never lies, so if they proclaim that the brothers Chuckle have produced ’20 years of chuckles’ then it must be the truth.
Now if it was those lying skaggs at Blue Peter that had said this, then I’d be questioning the accuracy of the statements. Or Richard and Judy.
BTW Why do we want Fiona Philips dead?

ParticipantA spokeswoman for ITV said: “We do not recognise the district judge’s description of our programme, or his opinion of the viewing public and the people who choose to take part in our programme in an effort to resolve their problems.”
So did the Judge describe it as a ‘serious daytime talkshow aimed at intellectuals’? ‘Cos if he did that I certainly wouldn’t recognise his description.
The trouble is that often the only way to get these shows off the air if for one of the general public to get killed in the process of making it, like with Noel Edmunds ‘Late Late Breakfast Show’. Forget headbuts, we need shootings!

When I was in computer forensics I used to have a ‘luggable’ 486 PC to take to jobs with me. My boss always insisted that I take it since back in 1998 the sight of a large aluminium box unfolding into a PC was suitably imposing.
It did fuck-all really, but it looked like something out of ‘Bugs’ so we stuck with it.

ParticipantI watched 28 Days Later the other day to cheer myself up, and had forgotten how good it was. Will definately be watching 28 Weeks Later, just when the wife isn’t about to get freaked out.

ParticipantNo, it was a bizarre sci fi/fantasy FPS, with some RTS resource management thrown in for good measure. On multiplayer, you got to play the games namesake, who was a giant vs other players, which was good when there were only 4 players on the map.
Team fortress sucks when there’s only 4 players 😉
