Sorry…. And you want to argue with me on this subject?
LoL just pointing out a few precautions that make using PC’s a safer environment. I can honestly say that I have not had a virus on any of my various computers since ohhhh… i think it was 2002 (though to be fair I have had other issue to deal with over the years – NOT virus related mind.)
As for your other bits.. i dont think asking a load of security experts for their opinion is ‘skewed statistical nonsense’ There are no statistics there at all in fact.. and it showed quite a balanced opinion overall. (I am discounting the survey mentioned at the start as it is pretty meaningless.)
Why do most creative types use macs? Well… in my experice airy fairy creative types are not the most analytical sensible people when it comes to maiking hardware buying decisions. 😀 “Ooooo look at the lovely thin computer thing that is so nice and shiny!” they say as they flounce around in a style over substance ecstasy. 😈
As for my game prediction – I think I can make a fair guess… the Mac still uses normal PC components… and he will be playing games in a windows environment… so why can’t I make a judgement based on experience? Sure his mac will meet the minimum specs, but will it play BF3 as well as my PC which has a better processor and GFX card and is overclocked / watercooled? Or even close? How can it possibly? Unless it has magic apple pixie dust inside it too?
My point re CS5 is valid too don’t you think? Say he does want to use CS5…. which he CAN use in OSX…. will that OSX magic turn his I3 processor and half gig memory GFX card into something special? Which machine would you bet on to render an after effects timeline quicker?

ParticipantWell, i spent about a grand a few months ago – SSD, I7 950 processor (water cooled) GTX 470 and the usual extras. Run kaspersky on it and keep your firewall on… low risk of a viral failure I hope. Simple precautions like mirroring your drive to an external after installing it in case of catastrophe makes re installation less of a pain.
I am happy with my 24″ monitor – but the machine could easily handle a bigger one if you really want the 27″
i still reckon PC specialist are a good deal – but plenty of other similar companies out there.

ParticipantOK I will bite.
Was trying to ignore it… but it is turning into a ridiculous love in.
if you prefer the Mac interface to windows (and many do) then great. But what do you want to do with it?
Video editing? Final cut pro used to be the daddy for sure… but newsflash – the BBC last year started converting from Final cut to CS5 for the majority of its editing. This is extremely hardware reliant… for the same price as your mac you could buy a much more powerful CUDA NVIDIA card and faster I7 processor to number crunch.
Photoshopping? Similar to above – why use a lower specced machine when the programme is OS agnostic?
Play some games? Well – you need to bootcamp into windows… but will have a relatively shit processor and GFX card (pound for pound.) And no… that hardware WONT play BF3 very well on a 27 inch screen at its native resolution.
Want to avoid viruses? Dont believe the hype. Interesting link here…

Blows the myth about Apple being more secure out of the water. The less niche it gets the more at risk they will be.
Superb marketing and a lot of fluff…. don’t get sucked in.

ParticipantI have the 470 – great card, as long as you get the version with 2 fans rather than one…. BUT.
Major issue with outputting from the 470 to certain projectors which affects me 🙁 (still waiting on driver update 6 months later!)
I would go for ATI mate… UNLESS like me you needed to get NVIDIA because you want to use CUDA for CS5 production suite.

ParticipantHey wait a minute!
Why have you fucked up the site? There was a really handy system scanner on the main page a few days ago. It looked through my computer and found a whole bunch of problems… for free!
Bring it back!

ParticipantGood work fella.
How much is it exactly and how long is it booked for? I and no doubt others would contribute.
Server messages along the lines of “Matt is looking for small boys – contact me on the forums” are not welcome by the way.

ParticipantHmmm – most likely Bob would have had to bow down to Matts authority as XDC founder and take what he was given.
Nice to hear that XDC are bonding in ‘special’ ways!

ParticipantYeah right blame it on bob.
Biggest Freudian slip ever I reckon!
Any pics from the XDC meet up then? Not the naked ones please.

ParticipantIm not too bothered re the crosshairs business to be honest…. it is a bit stupid how you can’t use machine guns properly without them…
If you could have vehicle crosshairs but not on infantry that would be ideal… but that would be too sensible.

ParticipantYeah I like those settings.
Spotting is good… 3d spotting is bad. Very easy to hit the map key and see what is about if your team mates are spotting for you.

ParticipantHmmm – your ping is always way better than mind you selfish git. Trouble with you sniping is… i don’t have you covering my back when I go for a flag… and when i go to spawn on team mates if only you are left you are miles away!
I like a bit of sniping myself – but UAV’s / sniping should be left to the many many lone wolf candidates out there who do nothing else.
When you are in an XDC squad you should probably help them out by being something useful.
Totally agree with you on hardcore though Wolf. Matt just isn’t hardcore enough…rumour has it that he is in fact a big pansy 😀

Oh and when are you going to join us again Turks? Not seen you about since before Christmas?
GF of 2.5 years broke up with me last weekend so might have some more time on my hands! However, am completely addicted to Dragon Age, and DA 2 coming out in March… aint got time for BF and its buggyness! Might give it another go some time in the next few weeks or so 🙂
🙁 Sorry mate -that really sucks. You seemed so close!
Plenty more fish in the sea…. etc etc …. more cliches… etc…
Killing wolf in BFBC2 is both easy and satisfying – so may be worth a punt for helping you recover.

ParticipantWell – I haven’t heard anyone complaining – but in general I agree 100% with you both on this stuff. They have pretty much fixed spawn camping as far as i can see… and don’t mind any of the tactics described above.
Overpowered aerial units though… that IS shit. But whats new? 42 was unplayable by the end because of annoying crack pilots – maybe this will go the same way.
