XDC MadHippy
ParticipantMy mate has just dropped off a pc that he has been building (Badly I might add)
It an asus p5w m’board with core duo 6600 and an 8800 gfx card – I’m tryin to sort out his mistake hopefully. Are there any gotchas/catches I should know about? I’ve put hundreds of systems together but not with this hardware so you may be able to help. I’m thinking pull it apart and start from scratch. At least then I know it’s done properly.

ParticipantSeems to be workin OK after removing the raptor drive and changing a few bios settings. I’ll keep going with it for now. If it’s not workin by morning I’m gonna take it down to case level an build it myself
Gonna peruse the asus site to see if any known issues

ParticipantAsus boards are great, used them for about 7 years. Even defaul setting work finr. I thinj you need to make sure your power supply is strong enough

Participantreboots too quick to see it. Think I’ve found the problem tho. Found a support document the states that the board will not support core duo without a bios update.
The fix?
Put a different CPU in and flash the bios ( I don’t have any spare cpu’s kicking around) or approach the retailer for a bios exchange
fooking thing!!

Participantall you need to flash the BIOS is a floppy drive.
it should take with that chip.
is it alt & F2 during POST ?and you can stop the reboot by turning off auto restart
system properties, advanced, startup and recovery, untick auto restart.

ParticipantI suggested that but the guy who’s kit it is wants to go via the bios exchange route.
http://event.asus.com/2006/mb/P5W_DH_DELUXE_faq.htm
he’s taken it home now (2 hour drive) and will contact overclockers in the morning
Feel a bit sorry for him tho. Spending 1500 squid only to find it will not work. I’ve offered to set it up once he gets the board sorted
on a side note those 8800 gfx cards are fuckin huge!
Thanks for the advice Gonzo – nice one!
