ParticipantIs it possible to network all windows operating systems together? including windows 3.x on 286s – 486s up to uptodate pcs with XP and Vista?
Doing a skills audit for Uganda, and not sure how much detail to go in to.
Cheers

ParticipantNovell Netware would probably do it but I’ve never really used to too much – early windows wasn’t really designed for networking… probably why Netware & IPX got an early foothold. I guess you could also do it (albeit slowly) through an RS232, but what would be the point?

ParticipantIt’s certainly possible, but probably tricky, and could depend on what you mean by “network”.
For example, do you want a central user database where anyone can logon from any computer? Or do you simply need a central file store? Or do you just need a way for all computers to see the internet?
For Windows 3.x you’ll need the “Windows for Workgroups” version I think. You may need a Win2k/ or WinXP Server sitting somewhere too, which could help pull all the various network types together.
Also, for the Windows 3 PCS, getting a working network card could be a challenge.

ParticipantWell the context is…
My university is in partnership with a teacher trainer college in Uganda. Over the last 7 years, we have been donating fuck loads of computers. The uni is now trying to secure £100,000 from the government (development aid or something), enabling an internet connection, networks, tech support (most of the charities donating pcs to africa dont add tech support, so perfectly good pcs are being used as expensive door stops… or they would if there were dorrs :)) etc.
My part in this is to gather together an audit of skills, allowing the money to be spent wisely… I am planning on printing out some sheets with desktops of the different opperating systems shown (we have been vary varied in our donations!), and gauge which opperating systems people are most familiar with…
I am interested in the 3.x front, as if these pcs cant be added to the network, there is little point in testing peoples abilities in using them…
Cheers for thehelp 🙂

ParticipantCheers guys.
Right, the next question….
For this audit, I need to identify how much computer hardware knowledge there is floating around (not much says the reading)…
To do this, I am going to print out and laminate a universal sheet to use with all questionnaires (as below), and ask people to identify the different parts.
However, not being much of a whizz myself (I blew up my first pc within a few hours of owning it!), I was wondering if someone could give me a hand in labelling all the ports you can see in the bottom picture (Which is shit – if anyone can find a better pic of the back of a desk top pc, then give me a shout!) – especially the pink long one (is that a serial connection?) and green one too (Not a clue what that is!) … is the big black one just called the power socket… or hasit got a samoflangie type name?
Any help would be appreciated – and will mention you in my memoirs, when I am fucking rich and famous!
