This isn’t a request for help, it’s a rant. Of sorts.

My X-Fi card rocks (quite literally) my onboard sound system, although it is a touch erratic. And by ‘a touch’ I mean very, and by ‘erratic’ I mean fucked up.

It’ll work fine for a couple of days and then it’s drivers dissappear, or it goes mental like a rape alarm or doesn’t recognise any speakers. Normally I’d say a few choice words until the wife tells me to ‘relax’ and remove offending item from my system and try and repair it by chucking it across the room or through careful use of a lump hammer.

However, I’m in a quandry. When this card works, it’s truely awesome (to the max). But then like yesterday it took me an hour to get it working again.

Am I the only one here having such problems, ‘cos the Creative site’s full of mentallers ranting about them?

ever thought of a replacement from where you purchased?

I’ve never had an issue with mine since day 1 :/

I have the F4tality one though with the extra mem

I think Jonny had issues with his X-Fi in 2142. A few thoughts: Have you disabled your onboard audio through the BIOS? Are you using the latest drivers? Try moving the card to a different PCI slot? Is it just 2142? If so try setting the audio setting off X-Fi to something else and see if that cures it.

I might try changing the PCI slot, but from what I’ve read at creative, I’m certainly not the only one to experience these problems, which is a shame ‘cos the card does deliver the goods in spades.

I’ll try some jiggery pokery with the PnP settings and the IRQ’s to see if I can make it a bit more stable.

I have had it with creative – their drivers are the worst in the business – you an practically guarantee problems with all their products… we need some more competition in the soundcard market.. god knows how these jokers managed to get a monopoly so easily.

I am still seething at the fact that i was duped into buying a card with ‘X-FI’ in the title…… which… wait for it…. doesent let you use any x-fi options in games! It doesent have the fricking chip! How the hell do they get away with this bullshit?

I took my X-Fi card out of my machine last night and it won’t be going back for the foreseeable future. Twice in the space of 10 minutes the card hit me with such loud feedback that my wife could hear it when she was watching TV in the next room, and I was using headphones!

I logged onto another server afterwards and played 2142 for 30 minutes with no problems, although admittedly I took a performance drop and the sound quality is noticably worse, but at least it worked. What’s annoying is that I’ve spent more time trying to get my PC running with the X Fi card than I have actually using it.

Normally I find that hardware might be hard to configure at first, but once it’s working you don’t have to worry about it, but not in this case.

    🙁
