Tried to power up my PC this morning and have hit major problems.
The power light comes on and the fans are going but there is a noise coming from the tower as if a key on the keyboard was stuck. The keyboard is not powering up and there is no signal going to the monitor. The system is not booting up at all and i have not got a clue where to start. I have opened up the tower and there seems to be no damage. Anyone any ideas?April 17, 2008 at 2:15 pm #66783XDCsPUNKerParticipantdo you have a spare keyboard?
I would at least try and turn it on with the keyboard unplugged just to see if that is the culpretApril 17, 2008 at 3:29 pm #66784GoNz0Participantas above, kilya over at the rats reformatted his dads pc b4 he followed my advice and swapped keyboard !
unplug as much as you can if the keyboards not the problem
April 17, 2008 at 4:20 pm #66785XDCiNSANEParticipantIs it a staggered beep or a long beep?
April 17, 2008 at 5:23 pm #66786nOmParticipantfind your mobo beep codes….might help
April 17, 2008 at 7:26 pm #66787XDCMouse101ukParticipantTried without the keyboard attached and still no difference. Its a staggered beep the same as if you hold down on a key for ages. It doesnt even get to the startup/BIOS/recovery screen and theres no signal going to my monitor. It couldnt be a Virus thats done this? Last time i used it was last night to play on COD4 which worked fine. Powered it down and when i came to use it this morning it was FUBAR. Think i may take it to a local guy who repairs PC’s for a living but would prefer not to pay out huge amounts of money if its something i can sort out myself.
April 17, 2008 at 7:51 pm #66788XDCMouse101ukParticipantJust realised that if they have to format my hard drive to get my PC working then ill lose my COD4 profile FEK!!!!!!!!!
April 17, 2008 at 8:13 pm #66789GoNz0Participantwhip the bios battery out, unplug it and press the power button a few times to clear the bios
if that dont work, remove the memory and see if the beeps change to the usual 3 for no ram, failing that unplug all the drives, strip it back to cpu ram and video, see if it will power
April 18, 2008 at 8:03 am #66790XDCOldPhartParticipantSounds to me like your memory may be shot
April 18, 2008 at 8:28 am #66791SilverSidesParticipantIf its not reaching the PoST/Bios screen then its not the harddrive so no need to format, how could you format when there’s nowt on screen? 😉
As said it sounds more like memory/ cpu/ motherboard problem.
Try unplugging everything and add bit by bit, start with just the cpu, 1 stick of memory and use on-board graphics and see if you get a signal.
goodluck
April 19, 2008 at 10:49 am #66792XDCsPUNKerParticipantcould be something as simple as your cpu fan is on the blink .
Go with What has been suggested. by unplugging as much as possible so you have the cpu, g card and one slot of ram (change it around to diff slots and also change try different ram each time) If you feel brave (not that brave) try remounting the cpu and graphics card. If its a modern g card and has power going to it. make sure the cable is plugged in
clear the bios clock as was recommended. Shouldnt need to reformat and even if you do and this guy is a computer expert then tell him you need to salvage some stuff first he should be able to plug yer disk into his system so you can rescue stuffApril 19, 2008 at 2:39 pm #66793XDCMouse101ukParticipantTurns out that the Ram boards had both become dislodged. Re-seated both and its working again. Thanks you lot for the advice.
