ParticipantThe one you’ve quoted there Doc seems fine and I’m sure would make an excellent gaming rig, although I’d want to make sure the machine I’d buy would have a suitable upgrade path. Plus the memory and CPU could be better spec (although you’ll be able to play 2142 like a dream with it).
If I had the money (which I don’t ‘cos I’m not a doctor) I’d go for something like this:
Mobo – Foxconn P9657AA-8EKRS2H Socket 775 – £80
CPU – Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 – £125
Mem – 2Gb (2X1Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800) – £185
GFX – 256MB Sapphire Radeon X1950XT – £175
HD1 – 36 Gb Western Digital WD360ADFD Raptor – £75
HD2 – 300 Gb Samsung HD300LJ Spinpoint T – £62
Monitor – 20″ Viewsonic VX2025wm, Widescreen – £275
Which comes to £977 inc VAT, but you’ll need a case, mouse (get a corded one), CD/DVD player and keyboard as well. My logic for this setup is this:
Firtsly none of the components are exactly cutting edge, but represent value for money, plus give you ample room to upgrade (buy more memory, upgrade the processor, get a X-FI card), but the bits you will hang onto for a while (i.e. memory and the monitor) are very good. The monitor’s not 22″, but it is widescreen and has some excellent reviews for gaming.
I’ve put down two Hard Drives, although you only need one, but I think it’s always best to have a seperate drive to store all your movies, games and art on, and leave the other for sticking the OS on. The first drive is a raptor, which are damn quick, although as pricey as hell, so I’ve specc’ed the cheapest one.
Obviously you’ll have the fun of building this one for yourself though.

Nice deal tbh if I had a spare £900 I’d be after it, though spitting on seagate 😛
only catch is Asus tend you use software sli whislt abit use hardware sli, just that tad much better but bang per buck @ £900 who gives a shit about a 1% difference hehe.

ParticipantActually, I have added a 72gb Raptor 10k rpm boot disk. The graphics cards are 2 x 7800 GTX, my mistake

What you talking ’bout willis? The only software SLi that ASUS do is their software selected SLi, which allows you to change to SLi mode using a utility in windows rather than opening the box and changing the switch over. There’s absolutely no performance difference between this and the traditional hardware switch, since all the software is doing is splitting the PCI-express lane configuration which is usually done using the clunky SLi switch on the motherboard.
edit: Also, that spec looks good. If I had a spare £900 I’d have it.

ParticipantIt’s the fact you have to use software at all which gives you the minor difference 😛 Software doesn’t run by itself and has to take a fraction of your resources from elsewhere!! Though a big fuckoff switch doesn’t need shit….except for you to press it!!

Participanthmm pharty… i wonder? The gfx cards aint as good as I was thinking of getting – but if the tech heads here think its a good buy then I could be tempted.
Why you selling it again? Surely its good enough for your needs at present?
If I was going to buy it how much would it cost to send to Bonnie Scotland? And can you part with it soon or do you need it for a while (as that may cause me problems due to a severe FPS deficiency that I have been suffering from over the past 2 years.)
If you chuck in a sat nav ready mobile phone then we definately got a deal 🙂

sigh… the software isn’t doing anything other than ‘throwing the switch’ as it were. Once the board is in SLi mode the software isn’t actually doing anything, you can remove it or stop it running and the board will still be in SLi mode. How exactly is that using your resources?
