Hi all,
In the next month or so, I’m looking to pick up a new phone. Problem is im pretty torn. I’m somewhat of a gadget freak myself and have an idea what I want but would like the opinion of other gadget geeks and also, to create another post on the forum to fill the gap until the explosion that will come when battlefield 3 is released.
Currently I run and HTC HD2, that I’ve popped android 2.3.2 on. I quite like it, but I’m not 100% sold on android. The system is still a little sluggish, not as smooth as iOS and WP7. I know I don’t want a fucking iPhone, they are for gays, this is fact so there is no need to discuss 🙂
I’m looking at buying a windows phone 7 phone, but none of the actual handsets are all that exciting. I had WP7 on my HD2 for a bit, but the way it was hacked, means I didn’t have the live services or access to the market place. The os itself is pretty sweet, just as smooth as iOS, but more intuative and better laid out. If i had to pick on, I would get a HD7S, but it’s not really an upgrade from the phone I’ve got, pretty much same processor, same res screen, similar memory, etc.
I also looked at a few android phones. I like the idea of the xperia play, I’m a geek and playing old PS games appeals to me. Not only that, it’s an awesome platform to play emulators in general on, capable of running NES, SNES, N64, master system, megadrive, gameboys, and of course playstation original games. I’ve ran emulators on my phone, and although it’s capable, the touch screen buttons are crap, especially for precision platformers such as super mario etc. Problem is, it’s pretty old hardware, the processor again “current gen” 1ghz snapdragon, same screen res to the phone I have, android 2.3. I’m worried about buying out of date technology.
The other main phone I was looking at is the Samsung Galaxy 2, which is a true “next gen” phone, dual core monster. The phone is pretty cool, but the software is android 2.3. This is one of the most advandced phones about and I like the idea of that, cos I’m a geek that way.
Ideally, I would like the power of the Galaxy 2, with the fold out game pad of the xperia play, running WP7 and allowing me to run emulators etc, but that’s not going to happen.
TL;DR
What phones are you guys interested in, about to buy, have just bought or think in general? Again, fuck iPhones, I had one for a month, hated it and got rid of it.
I’ve just upgraded from my old tired but ultra solid and reliable HTC Hero, to a HTC Desire S and in terms of performance from my previous handset is light years ahead.
I get what you saying about the processor screen resolution etc, but it comes down to what you are actually going to use the phone for. I thought about WM7 and was toying with the HTC HD Mozart but decided against it given the freedom of android. My thinking was that Microsoft have now managed to develop a decent mobile platform and in turn trying to tie you into an insular ringfence service like Apple to try and gain marketshare. If you play games alot then the Xperia is probably the obvious choice. I don’t play a lot of games on my phone so wouldn’t have got that much benefit from it.Are all the services on the WM7 platform free or will you be charged for accessing services like xbox live? The deal I got from my provider was too good to turn down and I was serious considering changing my provider, but I ended up with free phone, better data package and free handset insurance for the term of the contract for a £5 less than I was paying previously so it was a no brainer in that regard.
