ParticipantMy old man (not a dustman!) has an old ACER which he spends fucking ages on (works from home) and works at a snails pace – its shit:
Pentium 4: 3Ghz
15.4` screen
Radeon 9000
40GB
256ram.Was just wondering what sort of difference a £200 laptop from Dell would have on this performance… Such as the ones here
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/4x_vostro_1000?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd
PS – as he is self employed, he doesnt have to pay VAT on it… so £200 will go further.
PPS – He does a bit of photo stuff, would like to burn music and fuck about with cd covers etc, and basic MS office stuff… nothing too power intensvie.

ParticipantI think the main issue with his main laptop is ram, 256 is just not enough. Processor wise I don’t think the Dell laptops will add a lot, but 1gb ram vs 256mb there’s only one clear winner.
For most home machines more memory and a rebuild of the OS is the best thing.
Getting a new laptop with newly built OS with 1gb ram would be my choice, and add £20 and you can change the DVD/CDRW to a DVD RW driveAlternatively he could just get more memory for his existing laptop, go here from his laptop -> http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/index.aspx and let it tell you what he can get. Their prices aren’t too bad either

Participanti dont there there will be much in it processor wise but the extra ram will make a lot of difference better still if you can get to 2 gig for a few pennies more

Participantits all about the ram. 256meg of ram in a machine like that is a joke. get it upgraded. Also check the spec online for that laptop and make sure you know how much ram the mobo can take

Participantyou should be able to replace the ram easy enough turks – even with your ham fisted computer skills 😀
TBH though… if it was working ok when he bought it… but its slow now… you just need to reinstall windows! I mean a complete start from scratch again job. Get an external HD – plug it in, save any files he needs and do the reinstall, its a pain in the arse but if you save all the necessary drivers beforehand as well then it should only take an hour or 2 of your time.
Any computer after a while needs a good clearing out – its stunning how many people (i.e. my parents) are prepared to buy a whole new machine when the old one starts slowing down…. they only use it for browsing the web and using word FFS!

Participantnot just that but the laptop should have come with its own install disks that have all the drivers and windows that get automatically installed. Shouldnt be too hard
