September 21, 2010 at 10:30 am #7626511thSignalParticipantYep after reading this thread I reinstalled my copy of Civ 4, after playing for a couple of hours I remembered after watching my x10 assault infranty and x 2 artillery get wacked by 3 group of knights, some longbowman and a couple of hairy dudes carrying clubs how shit this game could be. Also in the space of 2 turns I had invented 4 religions. I love the series but there’s too many little annoyances to make me want to stick with it.
I don’t care that the emeny has 40 warrior units attacking me, when in any time/universe would 40000 club wielding dudes ever take on 10000 modern squaddies defending a city.
Promptly uninstalled! Was hoping they had patched that gheyness out of it but they haven’t!!!

😯 That fight sequence you describe was a problem in Civ 1 (early 1990’s), but so rarely does it happen now that I’m wondering what settings you’re using, plus what are assault infantry? And 4 religions in 2 turns is pretty impressive going, I can’t even begin to figure out how you managed that one, unless you lined up 3 or 4 great prophets or something.
September 29, 2010 at 6:03 pm #76267AlzirKeymasterSo, who’s got this then? I’ve only really had a chance on Sunday to sit down for a proper session, and it lasted 5-8 hours, so I must be enjoying it 🙂 There’s something missing from the game compared to Civ 4 though, and I’m not entirely convinced by the AI so far, which is the first time I’ve ever said that about Civ (although I’ve not ventured beyond Prince difficulty yet), but overall I think this is a good game. The changes they’ve made to the economic system are good, and an improvement over previous versions, and the changes to the Military side of the game are brilliant, with this being by far the most strategic version of Civ to date.
I’m itching to try it on multiplayer soon, as I’ve a feeling it’ll be quite absorbing, so if anyone wants to join me (coop or aggressive) give me a shout.
September 30, 2010 at 9:23 am #76268AlzirKeymasterJudging by the game I had last night, I don’t think I’m ready for Mulitplayer yet 😆
Damn the AI is aggressive in this version. Even if it detects even the slightest hint of weakness on your part, it comes gunning for you.
I’m also struggling a bit striking a balance between economy and production across my cities, so any advice from anyone here on that welcome.
September 30, 2010 at 9:28 am #76269AlzirKeymasterOh and my concerns over the AI were alieviated slightly by last night’s game, as previously it didn’t appear to be fighting very effectively. I still have a question mark over some decisions it makes, but it’s not as bad as I’d first feared.
September 30, 2010 at 12:42 pm #76270TurksMeisterParticipantI will give this a go when I get back from Spain- playing the iphone “Revolution” game and need more depth!
September 30, 2010 at 2:18 pm #76271AlzirKeymastertbh, I’d hold off getting it if you’ve not done so already. I’m itching to have a game with someone, but there’s something missing in the game which i can’t quite put my finger on, and I don’t want anyone to be disappointed with their purchase.
There are also definitely faults in the game, but I’m not sure yet how many are flaws in the design, or simply flaws in transfering my Civ 4 gameplay to the newer version. I’m enjoying it atm, which is the main thing, but give me more time to look at it before taking that as a recommendation.
The way I’m feeling about this atm, is that it’s been rushed out to meet a deadline, without fully testing some aspects of the gameplay, and that it’ll require some patching, or mods to iron out the problems. I can’t say for sure yet though, as it’s quite a bit different from Civ 4.

September 30, 2010 at 5:30 pm #76272AlzirKeymasterGood guide to the game for Civ4 players here : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=382233
Reading that I think I’ve identified some of the problems I’m facing, in that I’m not specialising cities. This is something I first read about in civ 4, but I never really considered that important, as I got away with it not specialising. May just try this for Civ 5.
Oh and the more I read about this game, the more I think it might be better played in multiplayer.
September 30, 2010 at 9:17 pm #76273SilverSidesParticipantThanks for the heads up, maybe it’ll need a patch or 2.
Im holding off for now but i’ll have to buy at some point, did you buy the box or from steam? I defo want the box and decent manual.October 1, 2010 at 10:02 am #76274AlzirKeymasterI got it through Steam, and been able to answer any questions I have by googling, so not missing a manual. Some of the stuff I’ve read online suggests the manual isn’t 100% accurate either btw.
October 4, 2010 at 3:15 pm #76275AlzirKeymasterAfter reading that article from Civ Fanatics I played a much more successful game over the weekend, and finally have a win under my belt, albeit on Prince difficulty. Having said that, I’ve rarely ventured beyond Prince in earlier versions of Civ, and I don’t think I’m going to any time soon in this one either because I’m still finding some aspects of the economy tricky to manage.
The biggest problem I’m having is with production, which I understand is lower in this version of Civ, but it’s at a frustrating level. Juggling production issues with Happiness and a random problem with gold, I was able to raise an army consisting of only around 10 units, with which I had to conquer the North American Civ on the Earth map. This took ages to raise, and cost a lot of gold, which is really quite frustrating when your empire consists of Africa, Europe, and all of Asia. The only positive spin I can put on this atm is that it means losing units hurts a lot more than in previous versions, but really I expect to be able to support a much larger army, and construct it in less than a couple of centuries, when I occupy more than half the landmass of the planet. As it happened the 10 units were more than enough for me to win this fight, as the NA civ were miles behind me in technology, but when you can’t be bothered to string out a game of Civ in order to nuke the fuck out of someone, then there’s clearly something wrong.
There are a few other frustrations I’m having with the game, and these are preventing me from recommending it to anyone here basically, even though I want to promote civ a bit. Yet, having said that, I’m still glad I got it, and I enjoyed the game over the weekend – so go figure 😕 . I’d be interested to hear whether anyone else has taken the plunge yet and tried this, but atm I’m sitting on the fence with my overall verdict, at least until I see what direction they take with the first couple of patches.

Love
This
GameGraphics are exceptional
Interface is excellent and v logical and customisable.
Help section works well and has encyclopedia of everything!
Animations great
Sounds are brill
Basically everything is awesome. Not sure what difficulty I am on – I clicked single player and it started a game for me. Finding it a bit too easy – happiness is not a challenge, money is pouring in, I have an army of 10 or so pieces and it is taring though the world. You can get by with far fewer troops which is the clincher for me – gone are the days of constantly dragging troops around the map. Also really like that some battles are over a couple of turns, so you have a chance to retreat mid way through a fight if you accidently lauch your cavalry at a unit of pikemen – something I often do.
For those who are unsure – download the 4GB demo on steam and see for yourselve. It is awesome!!
Up for a MP game sometime, but would probable take a whole night to complete! Although apparently you can stop at any point and start again when you want.
Alzir – I would be up for a game at 10 ish tonight if you fancy?

Sounds like a plan, although it may be a quarter past ten before I get in. Message me on Steam anyway when you’re free.
