I’m applying for some PhD studentships right now, and on the advice of a lecturer I’m applying for some in the school of medicine. One of the supervisors has contacted me about an informal meeting to discuss one of the projects and now I’m crapping myself!! It’s the first one on this page here http://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/SchoolofMedicineandDentistry/ProspectiveStudents/PostgraduateResearch/PhDStudentships/
Now, I’m 100% au fait with all the molecular stuff but I know bugger all about renal transplants – can you recommend some quick reading which won’t leave me looking like too much of a buffoon on Friday morning?

It all looks highly specialised technical gubbins which you no doubt know loads about… if you just want a very simple background to how renal transplants work then this website gives very good explanations – should give you a bit of a practical framework so you understand what is going on.

As a biomedical scientist you might have an Athens password for accessing online journals? If so the standard medical textbook could be referenced from here… Though I would stick with GP notebook unless you want a lot of detail.
December 18, 2007 at 3:52 pm #63666tessParticipantYou’re a star 😀 I do have the athens login for journals so I’ll take a look at the one you’ve suggested as the GP notebook seems a little rudimentary and I don’t want the Prof to think I’m a mong who won’t put the work in. Cheers 🙂
December 18, 2007 at 4:00 pm #63667xdc the docParticipantLol – rudimentary you say? 😳 I thought it was hard enough work myself 🙂
I would just do a journal search through athens if you want them high fallutin fancy words they use in dem latest research papers then.
Anyway little lady – why you would want to stuff your head full of that nonsense I dont know… theres housework to be done and vic needs servicing! 😈

I have Vic’s permission to further my education, as long as it doesn’t interfere with my other duties 😀
December 18, 2007 at 6:16 pm #63669XDC_WolfParticipantpffft, you’ll be asking for the right to vote next!
December 18, 2007 at 6:24 pm #63670tessParticipantOnly if Vic tells me who to vote for, I can’t make big decisions like that on my own!!
December 18, 2007 at 8:00 pm #63671Panic.foParticipantAnd they say there isn’t a god 😀
Anyway sry to butt in but good luck & all the best ^^
December 18, 2007 at 9:14 pm #63672tessParticipantI let Vic think he’s in charge, makes my life easier 😆
I’ll let you know how it goes – it’s only an informal chat to see if I’m allowed to apply. not a formal application yet!
December 19, 2007 at 11:07 am #63673RyzoParticipantWoo! Go Tess!
December 21, 2007 at 10:40 am #63674tessParticipantYay, he has said he’d welcome my application. Now I have to meet the other supervisor in January, and keep my fingers crossed!
December 21, 2007 at 1:26 pm #63675XDC wild egg tamerParticipantcongrats and best of luck for January………… 😀
December 21, 2007 at 2:20 pm #63676xdc the docParticipantNice one! You must have impressed him. Good luck!
December 21, 2007 at 8:59 pm #63677XDCNeonSamuraiParticipantTess, I’m not medically trained, but I reckon if I was lecturer dealing with these kind of studies I’d be darned impressed if one of my potential students turned up with some kind of human/insect hybrid. My advice is try and get hold of one of these:
Bang! Straight to the top of the class!
December 21, 2007 at 9:29 pm #63678tessParticipantZOMG you’re so right, now I’m off to my secret underground lab to invent a new species!
