Good news 🙂 – Email from PC World saying my BF2142 has been dispatched.
Bad news 🙁 – 5-7 days delivery quoted.
Looks like I’ll still be on BF2 over the weekend…..

Bloody good idea getting the patch now.
Anybody else find it simply gobsmacking that there is a patch before the game has even been released. Makes you think the QA process for cutting the gold disk was a bit wank, doesn’t it?
I can imaging the managers now:
Tech Director (aka TD) : Boss, we’ve still got shitloads of bugs. There’s so many in Devtrack that we’ve had to buy a new server for the bug database.
Dev Director (aka DD) : But my schedule says we are cutting Gold this Friday. Get your engineers to work late, while I talk to Commercial Director and get an extension.
TD (mutters under breath): But they’re already working 20 hours a day and have been for weeks…..what do you think is causing all the damn bugs…..Cut to DD walking into commercial directors office…
DD : Hi boss. We’ve hit a few snaggets in development. While my plan was great, those bloody engineers gave me wrong time estimates. So we need another few weeks before we cut gold.
CD
DD (gulping) : Erm – we didn’t run that long enough to fix the real bugs people found.
CD (vein on forehead still throbbing) : OK. Lets put out a patch.
DD : A patch available before the game has even been delivered??? That’s a record even for EA!! And I thought you didn’t want to look stupid?
CD : I just want my new Porsche….

Not really – over the years I’ve played a number of new releases which have had patches available immediately. I think even BF1942 had a patch that came out a couple of weeks after release.
I am happy with patches – as long as they fix bugs and don’t introduce errors. I’m a realist – I know that a major software release is always going to have some faults and patches will be necessary.
No word from Amazon on my dispatch – I think I’ll be on BF2 as well this weekend…
October 19, 2006 at 12:51 pm #36160XDCiNSANEParticipantTheres a patch?

But it’s sheer bloody laziness on the part of the developers. It takes advantage of the fact that PC games are patchable, and glosses over the fact that this allows them to ship crap to start with. And when you get multiple patches out and also addons (e.g Armoured Fury, SF etc), then it gets bloody hard for an end user to get a decent install order together. It shifts the whole problem on to the poor bloody end user. For people like you & I who are (a) quite computer literate and (b) understand games and patches then it is annoying but not a stopper. But for many people its simply too much and they give up.
Compare this with shipping on and Playstation or Xbox – you simply cannot patch these as you need to recut the disks. So games on those platforms have some serious QA on them. Games companies save money on PC’s by having a lower standard for shipping games on that platform.
I’ve worked in the games industry for years – some of those at EA – and I know how these people think.
(Sorry – ended up being a rant ! 🙂
October 19, 2006 at 2:10 pm #36162XDCMADMAXParticipantf it, i shall be using ea downloader

on the plus side DHL are a pretty major distributor so delviery should be speedy, PC World probably put that disclaimer to cover their ass.
October 19, 2006 at 2:50 pm #36164itchinadsParticipantCheck http://www.totalbf2142.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5074
I think it says if you get it thru EA Downloader, it may be prepatched 😕

Nope it’s the same as the boxed retail version and you will still need to download and install 1.01 patch before playing
