May be of no interest to anyone.. if so just skip this post. But as you are a bunch of geeks and one nerd (Insane) I thought I would show you my home network.

I have a central hub in my utility room now…

It acts as my media storage and network distribution centre. It also acts as my print server and my 2 phone lines come in here to be distributed round the house.

You can see here my audio and data patch panels. They are connected to my wireless router and a 24 port switch. On the bottem left is my NAS (network attached storage.) It has 2 1 terabyte Hard drives in raid 1 – so if one fails you have a working backup on the other at all times. They are hot swappable as well – so no down time.

All the wires end up at these outlets…

There are 12 in the house – with 2 coax, 2 data and 1 phone line at each.

It is an awesome setup… but I wouldn’t like to try it in an old house. Quite cool if you build your own pad however! 😀

I had some useful advice on small net builder – and our very own 11th signal also helped me out with some inside trade knowledge.. ta mate.

    lol

    sad geek

we have a similar setup but no where near as neat and tidy.

hidden behind the main pc (somewhere under the dust.. not seen it for a while now that I think about it) is a 12 port cisco 1 gb switch which connects to the router and a separate WAP. From there the cables run direct from the switch to the various laptops and pc’s around the house punching through several walls and turning our entire house into a Faraday cage. I do wish I had the time and the inclination to go for a patch panel route but I know I am too lazy.

i’m doing my house up this year and would love to have something like this. All my pics, music and films in one location, backed up and ready to be used in whatever location i choose.

    A few questions doc.

How do you upload files to the storage ? Is it from one pc or can it be done from any machine that is connected to the network ?

How much did that all cost ?

On the assumption that it was quite costly (it looks expensive) how can i achieve something similar cheaper ?

If you do the work yourself it aint that dear…. I kind of got screwed by the guy who pulled my cables on price I think,,, but the cost for everything (NAS…. few hundred feet of cat 5… faceplaces… server box… switch… patch panels… paying someone to pull all the cables and do all the terminations… came to about 1300 I reckon. You could save almost half that by doing all the work yourself.

The thing is… there isn’t another house with a network like this for a few hundred miles where I live (no exaggeration) so I think it could potentially be a deal maker if I went to sell the house…. so would be worth it.

    There are good deals around,..

    the 24 port 1gig swith was only 90 quid…

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280367296122

The network box and patch panels were really cheap on ebay.

Cat 5 e is not too dear – I got mine from cable monkey.

The NAS…. you could spend 100 quid… or over a thousand. I reckon mine is a good deal for what you get…

    http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase9.9&prodID=B100820

When i bought mine they had an offer to give you a free 2nd 1terabyte drive when you bought it.

re the NAS… any computer on the network can stream or upload to it. Because I have put a 1 gig network through the house I can potentially stream 2 HD videos (blu-ray quality) in two different locations simultaneously 😀

I guess this explains that robotic voice of yours on TS doc, it’s actually your house talking to us.

That’s awesome doc, I’d love a setup like that. Currently I use my main gaming PC as a home server that does everything and use the router as a wireless hub for my NW. I’ve got 1.5TB of storage with tons of films and TV programmes that I can stream to the laptop, xbox or the PS3 wirelessly and indeed use it as a fileserver/printserver for my laptop. The PS3 is a pain to sream media to though, had to download a seperate PS3 server to steam media to that. I hate sony.

When I get the budget I’ll get a setup like yours, tis awesome.

Found this whilst looking around the net:

    http://www.mede8er.eu/

seems a pretty good setup, not too difficult to configure and plays all manner of files.

    any thoughts ?

Looks good… this is a media streamer though… not something i have any use for. Nice GUI is handy if you are wanting something to play your files on a TV but don’r want to use media player or such like. I think a lot of people still have a NAS in the house to go along with this… which is quite expensive really. (Though you could do without the NAS.)

    Depends what you want!

You do get some that act as both a NAS and media player for your tv, its a bit costly tho…

i think you can use them together in a network setup. One stores the files on the hdd and the others stream the data from the main one.
