Damn I’m missing the old BF2/2412 days I wonder if there will ever be a game that gets us all involved again….

Pleasing all members of the old guard here is probably too difficult to make that a realistic expectation, but we still get the odd game which pulls in a good number of us. In recent years, BF3 was certainly the biggest pull, closely followed by DayZ, and to some extent BF4 (although as that was a bit too pricey on release I’ve had to give it a miss), and obviously you’ve seen a good number of us in eve as well over time, and those aren’t the only games.

There are two problems in getting “all” of us together for a game, the first being different tastes, and the second being contrasting levels of time. If you consider our history with battlefield games, starting with BF42 we had a lot of people really into it who had a common interest in what was a groundbreaking game, but over the years it’s become evident that we all liked it for different reasons. For me and probably most of us, it was the first game to have good combination of vehicle and infantry combat, but that was not necessarily the main attraction for all because quite a few still regularly express nostalgia for the WW2 theme. Since BF42 people have gone different ways (and this happened even before BF2 came out), some preferring ultra realistic settings, perhaps along with a WW2 theme, others preferring less realism in exchange for faster gameplay, and then MAX who just loves EA. That may be a little too simplistic a generalisation as some people just didn’t like the modern setting of BF2, the futurism of 2142, or the COD like mechanics which crept into the BF series with BF3. Some people also fell behind in terms of hardware, and have struggled making a comeback, either because games have changed so much since the days of BF42, or family commitments just make gaming a lot less accessible/desirable than it once was.

I personally wish more people would give PS2 a chance, as it would be perfect for a group like us, but it’s very difficult to get into, requiring a lot of patience and time which many people just don’t have, especially when BF4 and world of tanks take up a lot of their time already. We also missed a massive trick with TF2 which is generally considered one of the games of the last decade, yet had few admirers in XDC. I’ve no doubt that DayZ will pull a large crowd of us together again once the game’s developed a bit beyond just running and eating, as even within the last year it gave us some of the most memorable moments I’ve had alongside XDC. I’m currently getting the same kind of thing out of planetside, especially when teaming up with Paddy, Recoil, and Automaticmeat, I know the guys in world of tanks are enjoying it just as much, and I’m sure Max will tell us how awesome BF4 is.

The thing is that over the years we’ve become a collection of cliques who each prefer a particular type of game, and with some people drifting between cliques, but tbh that’s not a bad thing, until you find yourself preferring a game which noone else really plays (the reason why I bang on about PS2 so much). There are ways we could improve the way we do things, but as they require a lot of work and motivation, we normally just content ourselves with the status quo.

Anyway, what are you into these days yourself? Back to eve yet?

I think we should all get on teamspeak and sing `Kumbaya` together as a team building exercise. Or maybe the `Banana Boat Song` by `Harry Belafonte`

Nope I’ve quit EVE and left all my accounts to unsub and or being used by other people (not signal though), pretty much only play RUST and Warthunder now and even them I hardly touch maybe once or twice a week.
