BFG 8800GTS 320MB (supposedly overclocked)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-044-BG&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-071-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008first.. how come the OC version of is slower (on core/shader/memory clocks)
second.. its more expensive too..the only thing i can see is the BFG has “320-Bit Memory Interface” and more mem bandwidth. but the overclockers one has 512MB of ram..
whats the difference between the GT and GTS versions.
And overall which ones better?November 19, 2007 at 1:07 pm #62293xdc magickerParticipantHARD OCP have done all the hard work for you
http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQxMCwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==
from the conclusion
The GeForce 8800 GT impressed us greatly; it provides a better gameplay experience than the GeForce 8800 GTS for less money. That is a good deal in our book. Given the huge 90nm die size that NVIDIA has been stuck with for the last year, I am sure it is a welcomed product for it as well. Nothing about the core architecture has changed, but NVIDIA was still able to take the GeForce 8 series and manipulate it in a way that it could execute performance between the GTS and GTX in a lower power envelope, and most importantly less money from your pocket. And don’t fool yourself either; NVIDIA is not just being Mr. Nice Guy. It is preparing for a real threat from AMD’s RV670 GPU that is soon to be launched on an even smaller process.
Right now though, the GeForce 8800 GT offers you the best value on the planet when it comes to 3D gaming cards. You won’t be disappointed in its performance, and you won’t be disappointed in the cost. This was a reference-clocked video card; imagine how much faster factory overclocked video cards might perform? We will surely see double width coolers on faster clocked cards. With prices for the 8800 GT in the sub-$300 range you just simply cannot go wrong with the GeForce 8800 GT. The GT is a solid choice in video card value.
UPDATE – 10/29/07-8:29am: A very interesting addendum to this. I just got off the phone with BFG Tech and NVIDIA has been doing some strange things lately. As of this morning, the GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB (unsure on the 320MB) will have its stream processors officially increased to 112, the same as the GT. This should put the GTS back ahead of the GT as per the paper specs. However, the separation in the products is still going to be very small except for those of you wanting to run high resolutions with AA turned on. To do that you are still going to need a $400+ video card..or so. Our new spec GTS is on the way to us now and we will of course be updating you. Given the GT’s faster clocks and possibly larger texture unit, we will have to wait and see. Undoubtedly though, the 8800 GT remains a stellar value at the expected price points.
November 19, 2007 at 1:13 pm #62294LammieParticipantChaos the main differences accross the range are detailed below
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/geforce8.html
With regards to the differences in prices I can only assume it’s because one is a main 3rd Party Manufacturer and the other is an Overclockers value brand.
With regards as to which one is best?
Core clock doesn’t really make that much difference and there isn’t a huge amount of difference across the entire range. I would look at the one that has the best Memory Clock, Memory Interface, and Memory Bandwidth combination as it is this that fundamentally performs the workload placed on the card.

November 19, 2007 at 1:25 pm #62296Cha0sEngineParticipantta for the links.. all verry helpfull.. i was going to say “8800GT is it then”…
but then you fcuked all that up by mentioning the ati barstuards.. now im gonna have to look at those too 🙂 😉November 19, 2007 at 1:47 pm #62297WipersParticipantDo NOT buy a 8800GTS now. Any being sold now are old stock and the line is going to be updated in the next month or so with the same technology that’s going into the new 8800GT. (the new 8800GT is giving benchmarks which come close to the 8800GTX so the new 8800GTS should exceed current GTX speeds).
The 8800GT is apparently ideal if you use low monitor resolutions (1280 x 1024) – its being bundled with Crysis by some manufacturers. If you use a hi-res monitor you are better off waiting for the new GTS or a GTX. Trouble is that demand on the new 8800 is greatly exceeding supply and there are long wait times.
And yes I have ordered a 8800GT myself (about 3 weeks ago) and yes i am still waiting for it to come into stock… 🙁

cheers wipers.. yeah what ive read so far is that the GT is a bit better than the *current* GTS, so steering clear for now.The chap I sit next to here has orderd a GT form overclockers (the OCUk brand) and they say itll be in this week.
Presumably the new gen GTS will be more spensive than the current generation? if so itll be outta my price range anyway.
The other option as magiker pointed out is the ATI 3870 (£164 on oc’s)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-079-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=416It uses GDDR4 ram and looks pretty good. Granted not AS good as an 8800GT, bit is a little cheaper and more available.
so… my conclusion.. im fookin confused.. 😕 😕
Im not really a fan of ATI, no good reason for that tho. I have an ATI card in the media centre (2400Pro) which seems ok.
So ill probably order the 8800GT especially if its good enough to get the Wipers seal of approval 😉

Lol sorry Andy
I think the GTS is going to come out in 512Mb and 1Gb variants and is going to retail for around £250 and up. The GT is in the £150 – £200 price range. I’ve gone for an EVGA superclocked version which is slightly more expensive but it means you dont have to faff around overclocking yourself.
Overclockers have been promising the GTs for a couple of weeks now – keep pushing back the ETA. Not their fault, Nvidia just underestimated demand. I guess its the timing with the release of these new games like Crysis which have raised the bar for graphics performance.

SNAP!! i too have gone for the superclocked evga (currently around £205).. comes with crysis too!! so its not really much more than a basic ‘reference’ version.. o/c’s will apparently have then in on friday.. (we shall see…)
