Ok – for a gaming clan we aint doing much gaming together… but hopefully people will respond to this and get a debate going.
I have been playing around with my mouse lately (no thats not a euphemism!) And discovered that holding your mouse isn’t as simple as it seems. You can hold it tightly in your palm… gives good access to all the buttons but hard to move it very small distances. You can hold it lightly in your fingers… but I cant reach all my buttons that way and it tends to skew a bit when moving at high speed. You can use your wrist, fingers or whole arm for your movements. You can have your hand relaxed or slighty held at an angle… and you can use wrist rests or just put your arm on the table. Then there is sensitivity to think about!
So… why dont we be more scientific? If everyone could just post….
a) what mouse they use.
b) grip – finger or palm hugger?
c) Main movement modality – arm, fingers or wrist?
d) Sensitivity – low, medium or high sens… or do you switch sens depending on what weapon you are using? (Lot of modern mice let you do on the fly switches)
e) How would you rank yourself amongst your peers in ‘skillz.’ You can either just give a rough estimate or (my preferred way) tell us your kill/death ratio in a traditional FPS game (quake/unreal/cod4/ bf2 etc.) Possibly stick to these kind of game types rather than really hardcore titles like flashpoint / project reality etc. By kill death ratio I mean… when the score come up at round end on average have you more kills than deaths or visa versus? So if you usually have twice as many kills as deaths you score 2. If its even its one. If you die twice for every kill its 0.5 etcWhat would really be interesting would be if some examples of excellence were to post. I am interested in something called neuro linguistic programming which is %90 bullshit, but %10 very useful. One aspect of this is the idea of ‘moddelling’ excellence where you find it, so once we see what the good players do we could decide whether to model it or not (i.e copy it!) 😀
Madmax is the clearest example, and possibly Nom (I haven’t played much with you but from your posts you seem to be shit hot with the trigger finger too.) Maybe you guys (I know this sound sad – but it might be fun to see!) could do a quick video of you playing an FPS for about a minute or so – focussing on your mouse pad obviously. Would be fascinating to see what you are doing.

a) mouse: Razer diamondback
b) grip: Palm grip
c) Movement modality – arm and wrist.
d) Sensitivity – low to medium.
e) Kill/death ratio: 0.7May 3, 2009 at 8:35 pm #72268XDC wild egg tamerParticipantIsland life getting to you doc ?
😉
my mouse is a standard logitech 2 button optical wheel mouse. Hold it in my left hand, reasonably tightly. My movement is generally from the wrist and the sensitivity is the standard configuration. My kill ratio is awful.
As for NLP, i’ve only read a little about it but i can see how it could be effective.
May 3, 2009 at 9:00 pm #72269xdc the docParticipantlol – yeah – island life is boring… so its no good when i come to my beloved xdc forums and they are empty! 😀
You missed out grip…. and be more specific on kill ratio.
and get on TS WET – surely you would be up for a game of cod4 sometime?
May 3, 2009 at 10:38 pm #72270TurksMeisterParticipantWhat game is this for?

b) never really thought about this before, but I guess fingers and a bit of palm
c) again never really thought about it, and my answer may have something to do with a slightly less than ideal computer table atm, but fingers and wrist.
d) the highest I can cope with.
e) Depends on the game really, also the map and class I pick, but for pure fighting I’d get around 2 or 3 kills per death most of the time in tf2, and bf2 I think was similar. If you’re wanting to improve doc, I think mouse sensitivity is the main area to look at.

b) Fingers and palm
c) Fingers and wrist.
d) Depends on weapon (On the fly usage) start off with 6 though
e) No idea tbh, not really interested in statsMay 4, 2009 at 2:30 pm #72273XDCsPUNKerParticipanta) Logitec G5
b) Fingers and palm
c) Fingers and wrist.
d) tends to be quite high sensitivity as main movements are through fingers and wrist which means smaller motions
e) I dont really know to be honest ask someone i’ve killed lots or someone who’s killed me lots 😉 + it tends to be more reaction time than your ability to point the mouse in the correct placeheres my other mouse I mentioned to you for my multimedia setup and not really for games although i should imagine it’s pretty accurate whilst using it on a desktop
[youtube:3jzindup]ncXuQrvOO7I[/youtube:3jzindup]May 4, 2009 at 6:50 pm #72266XDC wild egg tamerParticipanti really have no idea about death ratios, like insane i’m not into the whole stats thing but i’d guess at 2 kills for every 8 deaths 😯 (1 in 4)
I bought cod4 but didn’t like the control system. I’m left handed so use my number pad and arrow keys for control but found i couldn’t use half the keys i’m used to! got fed up and haven’t played it since.
May 4, 2009 at 7:01 pm #72274xdc the docParticipantits not about srat watching… Its just a rough idea how well you play… Everyone has a rough idea where they are in the brand pecking order. Reaction time is very important… But seperate spunker. I often react first in cod 4 but if i fire just a few mm left or rigt of the target he can have time to kick my ass…. Thats all to do with mouse accuracy.
Wet why couldnt you reconfigure your keys? I dont understand.May 4, 2009 at 9:35 pm #72275XDCDMC12Participanta) Mouse: Razer Copperhead
b) Grip: I grip lightly with fingers
