Just got this unlock.
Woah! It does verily rock! Much more accurate than the AV missiles and I also managed to take out a gunship with it t’other day. Any of you seasoned Pilum weilders got any hot tips on how to get the most out of it?
Going to be going down the support unlock path next, so I can get my mitts on one of those sentry gun things. Are those sentry guns any good, or should I work towards the shotgun unlock?

Aim for the legs of walkers, unless you are feeling particularly gungho – then go for the underbelly! That pisses them off!
You have just unlocked the daddy of all guns… good man!
(PS it takes out men in one too, so use that in times of need!)

It works better in close quarters than at long range, but it doesn’t really stand up to sustained fire. I use it to cover my back a lot of the time, just keep an ear out for it starting up and you know someone is trying to sneak up on you. Another tip is to put one of the shield thingies just behind the sentry gun to stop people shooting it from out of its arc of fire. I unlocked the heavy machine gun and I’m starting to regret it now. Although it is a decent gun for supressing fire and defensive positions you rarely end up in a situation where it would be useful in actual combat. I’d unlock the sentry gun and then go for the shotgun.

Normal rockets do that too fella! 😀

That way you can unlock the guns with field upgrades.

I agree with Messy. Started doing this when the unlock gaps became a bit larger. I’ve got the Baur, Ganz, and up to PDS, all in this way. Works great allowing you to quickly pick up the weapon you want after a few minutes in a manic XDC squad.

Heh. That’s part of the reason I got one (that, and because Wipers constantly shoots me with one). I realised that a shot up the arse of most armoured vehicles sends them to the great scrap heap in the sky a week or so ago, and that’s changed the way I play no end.
I think I’ll aim for the sentry gun next, as getting the IMP grenades would be quite handy as well. Used them to great effect at Camp Gibraltar against the enemy walker until a spec ops guy was able to take it out with C4. The shield tip is a good idea too.
And I’ve kind of been doing what Messy and Erratic suggest regarding the other guns. The only one that really looks worth unlocking right now is the shotgun, as the others just seem to be similar to the standard guns.
November 28, 2006 at 10:29 am #40254XDCErratic-SpaceParticipantI’d unlock the Voss if you’ve not already? I find this gun the best for kills overall (although not quite the most fun). This on Cebera Landing with a Sentry spotting droid acts as a deadly combo.
Sentry gun – Brilliant. Not as an out and out attack tool though. I use it to hold the other side up perhaps while I flank them or move in closer with some nades. One thing I don’t understand about people attacking the titan when defended by a load of sentry guns is why people don’t start lobbing emp nades before running head first into their sights? Crazy.
You’ll have fun using the shotgun although it’s a bit crap unless on an infantry map or fighting on the titan. Can be fun running round a silo popping each guy in turn. Sneaking up behind the enemy while they attack console 3 & 4 is a great move too.
I swear on BF2 I used to c4 far more armour than I do on this one?
And after being taken out one too many times by that evil git Wipers I’m working up to the hand cannon that is the Philum.
November 28, 2006 at 11:41 am #40255XDCNeonSamuraiParticipantI got the Voss and love it. I don’t seem to be too accurate with it, although I am racking up the kills.
The sentry gun sounds like a ‘must have’ unlock, although I was wondering about the combined firepower of a sentry gun, floating gun pod (Acipiter?) and an LMG when used for defending a flag or a choke point. Might be worth experimenting with.
The Pilum is the best unlock gun so far for me. It’s a fantastic Anti Armor weapon, particularly because you can fire it and duck back into cover without effecting the accuracy (unlike the missile launchers). Still trying to work out the best place/angle to hit the walkers though. Must give the turret sniping a try though. Those Titan guns can seriously put a dampener on your day if you’re trying to capture a silo.
C4 on armour is MUCH harder in 2142 than it was in BF2, mainly because you get killed for just touching an enemy vehicle, rather than just getting pushed out of the way. It’s safer to either go for an EMP’d vehicle (but you have to be damn quick) or leave them lying around where the vehicles are going to be. Can be handy at Camp Gibraltar if you know that the PAC forces are going to be striding up the hill in their walker tuck them out of sight.

November 28, 2006 at 12:39 pm #40257WipersParticipantYup the Pilum is the daddy. One shot kills from behind for most vehicles esp when combined with an EMP mine. It has a bit of a kick on it so long distance shots can be a bit inaccurate. But its also handy for taking out Titan gun turrets when the enemy commander brings forward the titan to rape the silos – 3 shots will take out a healthy turret and 5 turrets will get you a titan destructor pin. So get an ammo crate and some cover and you are sorted. You will infuriate any commander/gunner by repeatedly taking out his turrets esp if he is trying to repair a gun at the same time.
The Acipiter sentry drone is a big disappointment – or maybe i don’t know how to use it effectively – I thought the UAV drone was cack to begin with but I now think its invaluable – its what puts the red diamonds on your hud if youre in a squad (along with the commanders UAV and spotting the enemy manually).
The thing with the sentry drone is
1) its firepower is crap – seriously you need it shooting at a healthy enemy for about 30 secs before it will take him out, but who is going to hang round long enough for that to happen unless someone is afk. Its only really got me kills when i’ve fired at someone, run out of ammo and the drone has finished him off. Its nice to get a drone kill but you end up feeling sorry for the thing cos its so crap. They need to up the firepower to sentry gun standards.
2) It will only fire at targets marked on the hud – so to use it effectively you’d need to have the UAV drone running too! 🙄 I think a commander UAV will light up targets too so its only going to work on close quarters maps like Gibraltar, Cerbere Landing when a commander is playing and responding to your UAV requests. It situations like that it will go a bit mad firing all over the shop so the best thing to do is duck behind a wall for cover and let the drone do its stuff… Until it alerts the enemy to you presence and you get a barage of grenades.
November 28, 2006 at 3:45 pm #40258DeicistParticipantThe drones also handily mark out which member of a squad is the squad leader for any snipers who want to stop your squad respawning.
