Starship Troopers 2 & 3

InSane keeps going on about how awesome Starship Troopers 2 is, so after getting it right about ‘The Mist’ I thought I’d check it out, and found that it was pretty good. Well recommended InSane!

Only kidding! Everyone says it’s shite. Everyone. Friends, strangers, Indian Call Centre Operators, everyone. But actually it’s not.

I had low hopes for Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, expecting it to be junk, but it wasn’t so bad. Sure if I’d just watched the first film and was expecting more of the same then yeah, I’d have been pissed off. Like if I enjoyed the film Zulu and watched Zulu 2: Hero of the Empire and found that instead of a handful of soldiers facing off against an army of Zulu’s it was about a handfull of soldiers facing off against half a dozen Zulu’s then I’d have become moody, maybe somewhat sullen. But if you just think of it as just another escapade of the Mobile Infantry and some minor bug-related hijinks, rather than a continuation of the original story it’s not so bad.

But if you’re a bit ‘old school’ and like your Starship Troopers with lots of arachnids, satire, 3 different sets of pert boobies, mechanized armour and copious amounts of gore, then check out Starship Troopers 3: Marauder.

Basically the war against the bugs isn’t going so well, and to cap it off Johnny Rico starts getting uppity with one of his friends (and now superior officer) called Dix, and ends up getting court martialed. To cap it off the Sky Marshall (and pop music sensation) ends up crashing on ‘bug central’, surrounded by idiots and a hot lady who might be Angelina Jolie if you look at her with your eyes half shut.

Well it’s not as good as the first, but it is funny (“Peace Terrorists!”) and has lots of action, albeit with low budget special effects.

To summarise:

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation = 5 Insane’s out of 10

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder = 7 Insane’s out of 10
