Meant to post this yesterday but didn’t have time, I just wanted to thank everyone involved for a great round on Masturd a couple of nights ago! From a personal point of view it wasn’t my best round of the evening, with my own killing spree coming the previous round on Blue Pearl, but Masturd was better for the sheer brilliance of Max and some excellent squad work from both teams.

Our team took an early control point advantage, and almost won then and there as we had them down to one point, the power plant, which we very nearly capped. Sadly that initial assault was beaten back, and our team ended up back on our respective squad leaders, who were surrounding the point from the cover of buildings nearby. The XDC squad, of Jonny (as squad lead, and providing us with some excellent spawn locations throughout the round), Paddy, Max, and myself, found ourselves in between hotel and power plant, at the foot of the sloping road out of the hotel, sheltering behind the building there, and firing down the avenues on either side of the buildings. It was on the noobs r us server, and as is usual on there, the noobs r us clan and their friends made up most of the opposition team. This can be frustrating if you’re on a crap team as our normally small XDC representation is often outnumbered when we run into their squad, and it takes something special to get past them, however it does make for a challenging game, and I really must applaud the move that got them out of this particular situation.

We were laying down fire from the position I described, but we couldn’t any closer to them, although they were getting fucked over as they spawned. Their squad leaders quickly got into a safe position though, allowing the rest of them to respawn safey and for them all to resist our assault from cover. We couldn’t budge, and this gave them the initiative which they took full advantage of, and completely wrongfooted us. They could see we were struggling to move out of our position, and quite deliberately they intensified the fire on our flanks, forcing us deeper into cover. Three or four of their squad were able to then make a quick dash up the side of the buildings and flank our position, running up behind a wall on our right. With us trying to counter this move, the rest of their squad moved up the left and we found ourselves boxed in with nowhere to run, dying horribly, and leaving the way open to the hotel. It was an awesome example of a squad working together, and something we should work on ourselves in future.

The battle for the hotel was ferocious, and while we just about held them off, the assault acted as a diversion allowing other squads from the US team to cap the backyard and hill while our attention had been on the hotel. The noobs r us squad took advantage of this and spawned in the town for a move on the mosque, which in turn released the pressure on us to move out from the hotel again. We moved directly up the side of the map to the Hotel, capped it easily, but somehow Max and me got ourselves seperated from Jonny and Paddy, as we found ourselves moving on the backyard by ourselves. This seems to happen too much really when we’re playing which I think is down to us all following our own lead sometimes, and failing to communicate our intentions but it didn’t really matter too much in this case as it led to something quite awesome. I was following slightly behind Max, when we rounded a corner and hit a 4 or 5 man squad head on. All of them were dropped in the time it took me to click twice on my mouse, in what felt like the kind of move the SAS would be proud of. It was just one of those “how the fuck did we do that” moments which leaves you giggling like a kid, but anyway it opened the door for the two of us to cap the back yard.

That was about the best it got for me, but Max more than surpassed it at the power plant, which was our next port of call. The way into the point was uneventful in comparison to the point itself, as Max only got a couple of kills on route, and I moved inside the fencing to start capping it with another team member. Max had other ideas though as while we sat there doing nothing, we just watched in amazment as the =XDC=Madmax tag kept flashing by on the other side of the fence, and running up and down all these alleyways, while =XDC=Madmax [AK47] somepoorbastard appeared 8 or 9 times along the top of the screen :). Wonderful display of skill which left me wondering why I can’t get the AK working in the same way 🙂 His display at the power plant was so impressive that when I later caught up with him attacking the hill by himself, and discovered we’d inadvertantly run into a 6 man squad coming the other way, I actually thought reviving Max under their fire might create a situation we could get out of (I’m not joking either ) Ok he’s not quite God, but clearly BF2 is like riding a bike, or at least he’s still a few steps ahead of punkbuster, because I was incredibly impressed.

We met up again with Jonny and Paddy, and the remainder of the round we just maintained the control point advantage we’d by now reestablished, which lead to a quite satisfying victory, given the opposition were no pushovers. Hopefully I won’t fall alseep early tonight and I’ll be on for more of the same as soon as I get home 🙂

was a good game. It amazes me how Max and people of his ability can just manage to make every bullet stick where as Im the type who’s lying prone on the ground taking what I think is a perfect headshot, pump an entire round into them and the enemy just jumps around squats and takes one shot and Im brown bread 😯
Those are the moments when you hear the loudest curses on teamspeak 😆

As is always stated comunication is the key to success in this game and, of course, it never hurts to have a secret weapon like steve at your disposal 8)

Guys, I can honestly say I am really enjoying this game again and working in a squad with you all is making it more so enjoyable!

Jonny’s and Alzir’s display as squad leader is something I have yet to master, Im afraid m to much of a lonewolf at times and as displayed earlier, when I enter as squad leader I am a little to selfish and I dont help the squad as I tend to rush in guns a blazing.

More of the same boys! Lets show them what XDC is all about! Disband this clan, hell no!!!!!

tbh I’m more of a lone wolf type as well, and it’s the same with any game I play. You just can’t beat that feeling when you take out an entire squad by yourself, or in TF2 when you break into 2fort by yourself, beating half their team solo on the way in, and then again on the way out (and more times with insta spawns :)). It’s too much fun to help it, but it is to the detriment of the team overall, as I’d surely be more successful going in with backup. In BF2 Jonny and Paddy do a great job supporting us with spawn points, and it shows in your score when you’ve been part of a good squad. Paddy also boosts my score quite a bit with his charge in tactics, giving me a lot of revives 🙂

I am but your humble points bag. Seriously though, I thought I was doing ok at squad leading till I saw Johnny’s unselfish display of only scoring 9 points in a match by just being a mobile spawn point. Since then I try to avoid apping the flags when possible. We really could do with a full squad of 6 to do outflanking moves a la NRU, who are bloody good at squad play!

I may start doing support more so I can double the usefullness of being a mobile spawn point with the added bonus of a mobile supply point I might then get a few more match points 🙂
I actually like Matts style of squad leading as almost inevitably you spawn right in the center of the action as long as he can stay alive that is!
Paddy is more cautious like me although he has a tendency to be stoned a lot of the time and might as well be wearing a florescent pink uniform as he bumbles into a firetrap and takes us all out with him 😛 although most of the time he’s a lot safer than that
I sort of learned my lesson the hard way when being a squad leader and the rest of the team is on lone wolf duties as theres been too many occasions where I’ve been the only one capping a flag knowing that its only a matter of time before an enemy squad finds me trying to cap out in the open (like at the hotel) and I have no backup. Thats when you normally hear me cursing on TS about wheres me f*kin squad? *!!* So I know now just to be patient and wait for the cavalry 8)
