Ok geeks help me here.
I am interested in making a web site for a medical centre. Not to save money… just because i want to. Now… I did make a basic site a few years ago using dreamweaver… but a) it was pretty basic, and b) I though dreamweaver was the most unintuitive piece of crap software ever.
So…. any tips? Wheres the cheapest place to get domains sorted out and traffic costs kept down?
Is dreamweaver still the only real option without going down the ‘website in a box’ route that I’m not interested in?
Chhers.

In my opinion, you shouldnt be using Dramweaver or any other website creation software, as these days you should be using CSS to layout your website, or more specifically DIV tags, which arent handled well by design software which were good for table based layout.
So do yourself a favour now, and learn CSS based layout, here is a few links to get you started …
http://www.webreference.com/authoring/style/sheets/layout/
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/practicalcss/
Having said that though, the creation software is still usefull for quickly creating tables and forms, which you can then copy and paste into your text editor.
For domains you could use UKReg, the benefit of this is you keep complete control over the domain and get a control panel for all you domains to alter things like DNS servers DMX records etc.
For hosting try webfusion or fasthosts …
Or send Andy a private message, I believe he did web hosting.
Hope that helps.

😉
Give me a shout and I will look after you for the cost of the domain.. about £10 quid a year.
Recoil is right.. you don’t want to be pissing about in dreamweaver. Content management systems are the way ahead and customise these with css (or just download a template). I can help you install one if you want.
Alternatively, have a look at http://www.squarespace.com” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; who are getting a lot of attention at the moment. They are basically an online content management system and all the design is done in the browser.
cheers

This CSS stuff – sounds all well and good – but how easy will it be for me to actually make the site? I need a WYSIWYG type thing… dont have time to learn code/html!

what i suggest you do is to have a look at some content management systems… the easiest i have come acrosss is wordpress as used on xdcuk.com
this is a blogging tool but can be used to manage whole sites if you want it to
it is dead easy to manage and has wysiwyg tools that just allow you to type stuff and inset images as you would expect Word to etc
if you want i can install an wordpress installation for you to have a play with and you an see how easy it is to change the look and feel of it.
the only cost to me for hosting your site is the domain name itself so you pay for that and you can have a corner of one of my webservers
if you want to look at other solutions have a look here http://php.opensourcecms.com/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
cheers
