ParticipantPopularity of this has grown amongst the tribe of late. I also beleive that when the next BF2 space indavers shit comes out more peeps will shif over to RO.
So, with this in mind, is anyone up for coffing up for an XDC RO server???
I am keen to give RO a bash, but am put off as we do not have a server, I like to play games on an XDC box for a multitude of reasons.
Ideas gents

ParticipantHmmm…
As much as I love massive walking robots with with vindicator miniguns and surface to air missiles battling across a futuristic wastland, I’m not sure it’s what we’ve about really.
I think with the scifi element you’ll attract more kiddies, which’ll spoil the quality of gameplay. I haven’t played RO though as it involves STEAM which I’m no fan of, but I’ll pretty much go with the flow with regards to which game we play next.

Woah there – thems is pretty sweeping statements, esp from someone who aint played RO. I’ve played it, and, (sorry nOm ) , I just don’t like it that much. Its got nothing to do with realism, old skool graphics or such – it just doesn’t feel right and it doesnt feel like theres anything new. To me its a step back to ’42 in terms of gameplay – the lack of a command structure as there is in BF2 is a major downer. With the BF2 commander/squads you can get some semblance of tactics & teamplay going amongst a server full of people who have never played together before.
When I played 42 I thought I would never play a modern combat game – others felt the same. I wouldn’t touch DC for that reason. It was WW2 all the way. Now for me the thing about BF2 is the way it plays – the squads, the commander, the way each game is never the same. If DICE develop that in 2142 then I’ll be happy and I won’t give a toss whether I’m skinned in WW2 combats or futuristic body armour.
Completely personnal viewpoint and I have nothing against people going for it in a big way and even funding an XDC server (if the demand is there), but don’t write off 2142 just yet on the basis of a few screenies and the odd movie ( 😀 @ the Deja vu before bf2 came out).

ParticipantOne thing that is ghey about BF2 is the commander.. Dont you miss searching the map for the last man in hope to kill him and vice versa for the last man needing to get the last flag.. I used to love that part of 42 😀
I’ll be playing 2142 when its out regardless of future malarky.. what excites me is the change of gameplay.. the fact you have to destroy a huge ship in order to win the map sounds really kool! no more ghey flag hopping
now then.. the great thing about RO appart from its realism and one shot skillful kills is the attack/defence part of it.. theres no flag hopping, you either have to full on attack or defend a certain flag. theres no gheyness at all and no 1 person who is so ghey and alled Max and gets a gold medal.. theres no ghey medals or stats.. its plain defend attack destroy.. Quality product and pretty much bug free 🙂

ParticipantSince version 1.0 of the mod there’s always been more servers than players and the bods who’ve played this long term have always used 2 or 3 servers regularly since those days. These servers are still the busy ones since it moved over to Steam (or they were the last time I played).
Unless you can guarantee over 12 XDC’ers a night to turn up and get the server moving you’re unlikely to get the regular RO’ers jumping servers.
I’ve shouted for the past 2 years that people should play this, but I don’t think you need a server. On the plus side Phart you should try it anyway because there are decent servers out there.

Fucking A! RO is okay and does make a refeshing change from BF2, but its not BF2! Much like what Wipers said really, if you like gay graphics *just kidding* and no mini map *not kidding*
BF2142 is going to be more developed then BF2, its going to contain more features that were promised with BF2, that never seem to have happened and if it mean wearing a space suit, so be it.

ParticipantYeah i think its safe to say no-one’s gonna write 2142 off til they’ve actually had a chance to play the thing for a bit first of all, but i also do agree that more folk should give RO a go with a group of ppl. As a standalone i agree with wipers that it doesn’t have the ‘feel’ of a BF but with a large group on TS it really does have a quality that BF lacks in its purity of gaming. no frills no bells no whistles but a group experience i think that’ll be really enjoyable like 1942 used to be…
but i do still like BF2 as i can actually see where im going now… 😀

Participantwipers play for a hour or two for a week and you wont play bf2 as much, as justice pointed out its ‘pure’ gameing…..more team based play on most servers than from my experience of bf2…now on the movement side of things…play this and bf2 players seem like there on speed…apart from the walking speed which is a tad slow its nigh on spot on, i know the movement can feel clunky at first, but humans generally are clumbersome….
the best bit….a team of average TEAM players will kick the arse of a team with 3/4 leet players in, with little teamwork.
i hope to never play a game with crosshairs on again 8)
if you read a lot of the feedback you will find ppl who called RO a stinking pile of shite, find themselves returning to the threads saying how it is the best fps they have ever played.
in RO you survive/die by teamwork, tactics and sticking to the objective of the map 😉
me dazz and gra have mentioned amoung ourselves funding a server, i still help with the bf2 server (and will continue to do so) so would struggle to justify to me misses 🙄
imo it would be nice but as soia said there are some great team play servers out there…

ParticipantI think the price of an RO server was looked at, but it was very expensive, much more so than an BF2 server.
Anyway, when we go on a RO server we rule as guests who trash the place then run away without a by your leave 🙂

So fingers crossed Bf 2042, will be the same 😛July 21, 2006 at 10:54 am #30275XDC MadHippy

You sure about this Max?
Sane, There is still the flag hopping option as well as titan mode, I’ll be buying it for certain. If I had more money I’d buy RO too 😥
