hi all, i’m thinking about buying a laptop in the near future but really have no idea whats what with regards to the processors and gfx cards that come in certain models…..

I’m not looking at some daft alienware machine for 2k (as much as i’d like one) but something that i can have downstairs on the coffee table to mess about with, take abroad with me to pass a bit of time on the plane and perhaps play a game or 2 while relaxing in Italy.

I’m looking to spend about £1k on a machine, ideally it would have a seperate gfx card and at least 1Gb of memory……a reasonable size HDD would be a bonus, regards the cpu i have no idea if the amd turions are any better than centrinos, core 2 duos, semprons etc etc and the same goes with the gfx; is the ATi X200 any better or worse than the ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 graphics and how does that compare to the Nvidia GEforce go7300……….hopefully some of you peeps will be able to give me some advice……

    many thanks

    *edit*

is something like this any good ?

would it be able to play BF2142 ? or at the very worst BF1942 ??

    Very interesting question.
Having helped a friend buy a customised dell notebook recently, I thought I’d just see what they can do, and below is a customised laptop for £999.97 delivered:
    INSPIRON 9400 Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5500 (1.66 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 (incl Operating System Re-Install CD) – English
SUPPORT SERVICES Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
LCD 17″ Wide Screen WXGA (1440×900) TFT Display
    MEMORY 1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2×512)
HARD DRIVE 120GB (5,400rpm) Hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW with Software
    GRAPHICS CARD 256MB DDR3 nVidia® GeForce™ Go 7900 graphics card
PRIMARY BATTERY 6 Cell, 56Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery

The main cost going into the Geforce Go 7900 and from reviews this seems to be something that will run BF2 at about 40fps.
Thre rest of the laptop should be fine for other stuff, and you always use an external hdd if you want more space

cheers dutch, the setup sounds pretty much along what i’m looking for but isn’t the cpu underpowered with only a 1.66Ghz processor or does it make a big difference being A) a laptop cpu as opposed to a desktop cpu and B) core duo ?

scuse the noobness of my questions but i’ve not delved into laptops before 😳

Its an intel duo m8… Its 2 cpu’s working as one…

The intel have the fastest dual ores atm. (ok 1.66 gig is not the fastest chip out of them all but it should do the job for a while)

1.66 gig is the speed of one of the cores. So you get 2 1.66 gig chips working at the same time.

Intel Core Duo’s scream and kick the shit out of pretty much anything AMD has on the market, and yes I am an AMD fan too.

*Watches as Madmax orders Intel CPU and mobo”

    Back to laptops..

Save ya monies.. buy a decent cheapy laptop for such things as Watching “Art” / Films or Browsing

use the cash you save to upgrade your PC to better spec like you have been since BF1942 came out.. You know it makes sense.. just how much game playing are you really gonna do.. be honest with yourself.. probably one game then you’ll think.. jebus this laptop is toss for gaming.. the keys are too small etc etc

I bought a PsP cause i thought I’d be playing games on it all the time.. but I dont!

trust the Almighty iNSANE.. you dont need a gaming laptop.. no one does.. unless they are ghey and.. umm hactually I really dont have a clue why you would want a gaming laptop .. are they used for these people who attend gaming fesitval thngies ?? or people that fook off to Aus for a couple of years 😉

Insane speaks the truth… gaming laptops used to be the size of briefcases and make a noise like a 747 on takeoff due to the fans. Don’t know if thats changed. We buy a lot of Centrino laptops for work and they are the dogs due to the great battery life you get with them. Not sure if they are gaming Pcs though.

Glad to see Intel back on top with their processors and I look forward to building a Core Duo rig soon. I;ve always bought AMD but I don’t think i’ve ever had a hassle free build – theres always been some bollocks incompatibility with the chipset or drivers or sound card or other toss. The latest one is a problem between X-Fi cards and nforce4 mobos which I am experiencing the delights of. Feck it.

You will experience the same delights if you want SLi with an Intel board coz you will need an Nfoce chipset.

You can buy me old PC for a small sum of monies, it will do all you need

me thinks insane is right, the amount of time i’d actually use it to play a game or 2 is insignificent, at worst i can get an old RTS game to pass a bit of time that should play on a reasonable laptop…….

I may look towards getting one for about £500 that hopefully will allow me to do a bit of video editing as well as play DVD’s, surf the net, use excel worksheets etc etc.

I assume i’m probably best trying to find something with a core duo chip and 1Gb of ram….does it make a difference if its media edition or XP? Also will intergrated gfx still allow me to do video editing or will it cause noticeable slowdown…..more than anything it would be used to transfer video from a device to the laptop for storage prior to being edited on my desktop (but it would be nice if the laptop was capable as it could save time)

Thanks again all, all info is gratefully received! 😀

ok, just found this acer laptop……

Thanks pharty – I have a SLI board but have never used it as SLI and doubt will ever had the need. I intend going for a Intel chipset board – i’ve had enough problems with nforce, via, sis etc etc over the years. 🙄
