ParticipantWent to a really good talk put on by some history society this evening. It was most interesting, and one of the fellas there personally owned an Enigma machine and had it there so that we could play about with it a bit. I decided to encode the word CAMPF and the thing worked like a charm 65 years on from the time it was first used by the germans.
The talk was in two parts. The first was about codes and cyphers, spies and bletchley park and that sort of thing. The second half was about the deception used before and during overlord to convince Hitler that the Normandy assault was just a feint. Fascinating stuff all in all, with the added bonus that I got to play with a genuine Enigma machine. I’m far too pleased about that than is normal, I’m sure 😳

ParticipantOne place I would like to see as well Mike, its meant to be totally silent, not even a chirp from and birds, or the wind blowing through tree tops, silent.

Participant….went to Aushwitz 1 and 2 when doing my A levels, along various other ghettos and camps as part of a 3rd reich tour. You cannot fail to be moved and silenced by the place. We stayed in a centre opposite aushwitz 1 with a view of the perimeter of the camp, not a good recipe for a sound nights kip!
If Enigma and the like has an interest for you Bletchley park is well worth a visit although it does mean going through Milton Keynes!February 15, 2008 at 12:09 pm #65239Ryzo

Doesnt sound like a very Stag doo’ish thing to do. Unless its for the “you think marriage is bad? Well at least you werent in Auschwitz!” psychological approach to getting wedded 😉
