Went to a really good talk put on by some history society this evening. It was most interesting, and one of the fellas there personally owned an Enigma machine and had it there so that we could play about with it a bit. I decided to encode the word CAMPF and the thing worked like a charm 65 years on from the time it was first used by the germans.
The talk was in two parts. The first was about codes and cyphers, spies and bletchley park and that sort of thing. The second half was about the deception used before and during overlord to convince Hitler that the Normandy assault was just a feint. Fascinating stuff all in all, with the added bonus that I got to play with a genuine Enigma machine. I’m far too pleased about that than is normal, I’m sure 😳
