    by Bill Bryson

on the back of previous recommendations here (and in spite of Notes from and Shakespeare which were both crap) i thought I would give this a go.

and I am rather glad I did. Really enjoyed this book. there are some great explanations which despite reading a lot of popular science books were still new to me. i particularly liked his portrayal of the scales involved in our own solar system.

i also enjoyed the fact that despite the fact that the book was only published in 2005 some of the stuff is already out of date.. i love science.

I also like some of his ‘outing’ of some of the bastards of science who despite being aware of the dangers of what they were doing were perfectly prepared to keep on doing it as long as the money was coming in.

all in all a great read

you should check out Ben Goldacres “Bad Science”, an entire chapter on “Dr” Gillian McKeefe and one on homeopathy, refreshing to read and very funny in parts. Despit ethe fact that he writes for the Gruniad.

I think I have posted about this before – agree with your review there Mags. Top lesson in history that I intend to re read this year. I might check out bad science as it is my kind of thing. If anyone is looking for a really good factual book that will make your jaw drop with its genius you should check out ‘freakanomics.’
