Ok…. I have just moved into my new flat in a mid sized Scottish town. Organising my broadband through Toucan I find that the max speed they can offer me is 512K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe it. I have phoned BT but cant seem to get through to anyone who can help 🙁

Really pissed off now but dont seem to have much choice. NTL dont offer service in the area either.

So………. any ideas guys? Who can I write to to complain about my line/local exchange? I cant find anything helpful on the BT website.

At any rate my internet connection should be running in about 10 days time so I am out of action till then 🙁

Where the hell is Scotland? No wonder they have crap speeds… I’ve never heard of the place, and I am a geography student, so know all about these things!

All bt exchanges are now setup for ADSL2, trouble is that if your in middle of know were your stuck with bt for the higher speed and they are not cheap.
But Plusnet are now owned by bt, and before the take over test the adsl2 for them. They may be your only other hope.

It was invented by a guy at my school called Scott Thomas, who made it up for his ‘what did you do during the holiday’ essay: “I went to ‘Scotland’ to visit my nan.” The teacher caned him, but the name stuck and since that time I’ve noticed more and people have be claiming to come from ‘Scotland’, or as we told him it should be called: I’m-a-thicky-willy-face-who-smells-of-poo-land. We told him that just before we threw his PE kit over a fence.

What’s more embarrassing is that my wifes’ dad claims to come from Scotland. I’m going to put him in a headlock and give him a Chinese burn next time he mentions that.

packet loss can be a pain if using wireless to play…..causes connection probs and lag apparently…….i’m sure the techie types can explain better.

It’s pretty hit and miss, to be honest. I have played with no problems on a wireleess link, but then a day or two later I could get a crap experience.

One thing to note with the default Windows zero-config wireless is that often it drops & rescans the connection at regular intervals. I think it may be related to certain devices and drivers. With one card I tried I used to get without fail every 10 minutes a lag spike lasting 20-30 seconds. When I replaced the Zero config option with the utility provided by the original wireless chip manufactuer, things got loads better.

However, in the end I just got so sick of random dropouts that I ended up paying someone to reroute my phoneline into my office so I could get a properly wired connection. Now works a treat.

Me & the wife’s laptops can still access via wireless from around the house without any problems, but browsing the web, doing email etc means you tend not to notice dropouts.

I use wireless zero config because i find it better than the shit interface netGAY give me, i get constant drops, but im connecting to the router downstairs, so its pretty hit and miss also for me, my ping is relatively good most of the time though, around 30. I get connection drops at the worst of times 😥
