ParticipantAnyone offer any advice? I am scootin off to the comp fair in stoke on sunday for a look around and see whats about coz im gonna upgrade my PC or start all over again (Me PC is older than Gods dog)
CPU Athlon 64 3.4 + Artic cooling Freezer 64 Pro
MB (Asus K8V-X, soc 754,AGP only)
Gfx vanilla 6800 128mb unlocked+OC ..+ Zalman cooler(AGP obviously!)
Memory 2GB PC3200 (200MHz) DDR single channel
PSU Hiper Type-R 580w
HDD 160GB IDE
Case Thermaltake XaserIII Romeo
.. and a couple of DVD burners IDEHave only got bout £700-£750 max
Also should i take the plunge and get Vista or stay with XP? Either way i gotta buy it coz my copy of XP is ‘dubious’!
Have looked at Overclockers, Scan, Micro direct, ebuyer, Dabs but the cheapest i found was Yo-Yo Tech for bits and pieces but systems are a bit expensive, theyve got some good bundle deals!… oh and Ebay of course (some cheap systems but usually with crappy MB/Mem/Gfx!.. but willing to try em)
Im not too confident about upgrading and using some of my old stuff, I know this would be cheaper but i aint that comp. literate! but i may have to give it a ago…. problem is if i balls it up then we aint got a PC (my wife is disabled and cant get out very often so she uses it for t’internet etc).. so buying a new system would suit me better.
Was lookin for an E6600 C2D..
Sooooo… what should i look out for? Anyone know of any bargains?
Sorry for the long post!
Thanx in advance….(Stella all round if good info received!) *

keep existing case and psu…maybe get a 512gfx card…the 6300 should hit 3g without much of a prob…..the seagate drive is almost as fast as a rapter….dont buy an os as i have the student/teacher addition which requires no fecking around..pm me ill post it to ya….couple of hundred quid to get a laptop on ebay in case you feck up
😀the 6600 is a lot of money tbh, and the DS3 mobo and 6300 are the perfect match…..i followed the thread in overclockers for the DS3 in the mobo section and had my lads at 3g no prob, within an hour, could prob push for 3.2/3.4.
i would seriously think about building your own, become a member of overclocker forums and ask them to spec you a system……..have fun

😀 😀
edit* i got over a £100 for my 6800gt on ebay so your looking at getting back a £150/200 😉

ParticipantYou will need a new PSU because the new CPUs need additional power connectors for the motherboard

ParticipantI would go with an intel core duo from this guy
http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZarbico_computersQQhtZ-1
The prices are stupidly low.
There is only one intel core with a fx card in atm… But i look almost once a week at it and there is normally a few. £500-£600 will get you a fully built box that you know is working.
The only thing you don’t get is a os on it.If you can stretch to £802 you can get the core duo he has on there. Now that is a beast.

Participantyou missed the VAT off Messy

Slightly over his budget I’d say 🙁

ParticipantCheers for all the info!
Pretty sure the PSU is a Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2
I was lookin at the entry level C2D and overclocking em… doesnt seem too tricky!
This one seemed ok but the MB looks a bit duff + you just know the mem, hdd will be the cheapest of the cheap.
Has a decent Gfx card tho….
So, is it better to go for a slightly lower spec CPU with quality/branded components than a higher spec CPU with cheapo MB, mem. etc.? Hmm…. have i just answered my own question!?!
Just realised ….thats a LONG link!!
Oh as for Overclockers I would probably go and pick up anything ordered, only live 20 odd miles away!

ParticipantWell, got back from the comp. fair on Sunday….. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! 👿 A LOAD OF OVERPRICED CRAP. People must go there thinkin ‘OOOO i bet everything will be REALLY cheap… you know, like a car boot sale or summat!’ I swear i saw a stall holder rubbing his hands together, just waitin for some nob to come along and buy his 7300LE for £55.00.
There were hardly any C2D CPU’s, let alone sytems, it was all low end AMD stuff.
2 hours of my life and £3.00 ill never get back!! 👿 👿 👿
Now i know why i stopped going.
yours
