So what the hell am I doing wrong?
Several times over the few weeks or so I spy someone looking the other way lying prone on the floor, normally sniping away. So I walk up behind, lie down behind them, whip the knife out, press fire to stab. And…..bloody nothing. The knife flails away, makes a noise, victim turns & shoots me.
Now I’m right on top of the buggers – can’t get closer without actually getting in their trousers.
I’ve had similar when standing behind someone who is standing up. I just can’t connect with the knife for some reason. It’s pissing me off, and explains why I only have half a dozen or so dogtags.
I’m starting to think that I’ve been given the plastic knife unlock for babies….
PS: I should say this is all in-game action in BF2142. Not real life! 🙂
I think your problem might be lag Lensman. That’s why sometimes some dude can stab you when he’s about 12 feet away and you can ram your blade into someone’s temple at zero feet and miss.. There’s a couple of handy ‘how to knife’ videos on Youtube you could check out, but they’re mostly just some nasal-sounding American kid saying things like ‘ownage’ and ‘pwn’ed’.
One technique I’ve found to be quite useful when attacking someone with a knife is to charge at them and then run past them, before spinning around to attack them. Seems to freak people out.
Also don’t forget that knives are one hit kill weapons, so even stabbing someone in the foot should kill them.
I don’t think it is lag, as normally these potential victims are stationary, and remain so for a few seconds while I am flailing away. Also, my shooting does not appear to suffer from lag.
It’s just my crap technique 🙁
But I’ll try the rush past thing….
Don’t worry about it too much Lensman, afterall you could be ‘a great stabber’ which would then just open the flood gates for a surge of sexual innuendo’s concerning bottom sex.
Another tip, if you’re lying on top of your potential knife victim, don’t slice down, slice across as if you’re filleting them like a fish, rather than to cut them in half. That means your knife will have a larger surface area to hit.
Also, use active cammo to sneak around behind enemy line and attack from the rear. You’d be surprised how effective that is for getting kills on an infantry map.

.Huh?!! I just press the left mouse key….how the hell do I change how I stab for different slice directions?

please teach me too neon……….i too am crap with said utensil!!!! i go up behind someone, lay right beside them and flail away like a complete loon only for them to hear the swishing of my cammo suit, turn around and blow me away!!! 😯
The knife is the same as the other weapons in 2142 – sufficiently different from those in Bf2 to make it difficult to get used to them at first. I think there is quite a small hit box for the knife – you have to get quite close and go for the torso.
Mind you it’s still fairly random – i sneaked up on a prone Beermonster the other day to take him roughly from behind with my weapon so to speak – must have been there for about 10 seconds trying to stab him before he realised the swish swishing sound – he turned round and blasted me with his gun. Much ‘wtf’, ‘no way’-ing followed.
I’m quite surprised just how far the knife seems to reach. Last time I checked my little soldier dude wasn’t related to Mr Fantastic and doesn’t have extra stretchy arms!
If running straight at someone I dive sometimes at the end (about 1/2 a second before I would normally think it would work)
When fighting knife to knife strafe around and hack. Get him doing the sideways hack slice.
I try and move in crab like and slash.
When behind them creeping up on the ground I get right up close and aim for the middle of the torso.
Active camo is handy these days for knifing but once you’re behind them turn it off and run the rest of the way.
Titan: When they’re on 3 or 4 go through 1 or 2 and sneak up behind them. I’ve got quite a few kills like this when the other side get held up trying to sprint down the corridor. Oh yeah! On 1 or 2, hide just inside the entrance so they run in turn the corner and run down the corridor towards the panel. Often get a few in the back then too!@Wipers wrote:

I recall that event, very funny too. Must admit, if someone is running towards me with a knife, its much like the clip out of Indiana Jones, gun comes out! 😀
Run towards.. dive at feet and slice there lil toe off!

Me & him in a knife fight will be the longest bloody fight since Gladiator…..
The knife hits when your arming is fully extended.
So if you get too close to your victim the knife passes through them.
Stay a couple of feet away then you should hit ok. Having said that there’s always rounds when you seem to bring your butter knife 😥
Ahhh patience young Lensman and WET (whom I believe are both older than me), as the others say, the knife is a fickle mistress. I’d practice on the single player game a bit, just to get the knack of slicing someone.
Erratic, Wipers, Max, Rono and Spunker are the real expert stabbers (although I’m sure there are others), and I mean that in more than one way.
Although I can certainly identify with the Wipers/Beer knife fight. Twice on Sunday I almost had that Deathcultitus fellow with my trusty blade, but each time he realised that by my third swipe I was trying to knife him. Queue LMG to the face…
What I mean by a fillet rather than a cut is that you need to aim for the widest part of their body. The knife kind of slashes across the target, rather than a straight stab, so by aiming for the thickest part you’ll have a greater chance of hitting. If you attack someone on the ground by jumping on them and hacking away, try to aim so that your knife slashes are parrallel to the ground, rather than perpendicular.

That cheeky tart 11Signal is moving up my knifing list. He keeps getting me! My fave ppl to knife at the moment have to be Wipers and Badger though. Wipers especially after Tunis Harbour. It’s quite cool to knife Hippy and Minti now that I can picture their faces once they’ve been hacked ‘n’ slashed 🙂
(Oh and it’s great to knife Max but that goes without saying.)
