I’ve had a good run, 15 years online and this is the first time it’s happened. I saw FIFA 10 for £29.99 on frog-games.co.uk. Quality I thought! But 2 days after the release day it still hadn’t arrived despite the payment being completed via paypal. Anywho I picked it up from in town whilst I waited. A couple of emails to the company got replies advising it will arrive in a day or two. It never turned up and so I made a claim via paypal…..who eventually ruled in my favour as the person/site didn’t reply except I find out at this point you only get the money back if paypal can get it back from the sellers account!
Well I’m not the only one who’s been done by this site a look over the net shows. What do you guys think my chances are of getting a refund from paypal on the basis that they’ve been negligent? I feel as soon as they started receiving complaints then they should have put a freeze on new payments? I’m waiting on paypal’s reply at the moment.
What I’ve learned from this is that whenever I use a new website I should be checking the WhoIs details for the registration of the site. In this case it would have shown that the website was only a month old. It would have also shown a conflict in location of owner details. I’m sure you guys wouldn’t have been duped by this anyway but worth noting when buying from somewhere new.

November 16, 2009 at 10:19 pm #74691To0THBRU5HParticipantWhen I use a new website that I have never used before or heard of I use my credit card. I seem to think that you can get your money back if you use a credit card (instead of debit card) by going through your bank, but this could be completely wrong 😳
November 16, 2009 at 10:30 pm #74692XDC wild egg tamerParticipantno, you’re right toothy. Credit cards are covered by a separate agreement within the consumer protection act (or summat) that effectively means the credit card company is liable for any losses incurred as they are buying the product for you thus if a fraud is committed they have to reimburse you for the cost of goods and then try and reclaim the losses.
I’m sure someone can explain it better than me.
maybe this chap:-

now help me with this:-😉
November 16, 2009 at 11:13 pm #74693To0THBRU5HParticipant…but yes, I did read your original post and you mentioned PayPal. Anything with paypal is likely to f*ck up, I only ever agree to use paypal for clear cut ebay transactions 👿
November 17, 2009 at 12:10 am #74694XDCErratic-SpaceParticipantYou’re quite right, CC is the way to go in these cases. I simply didn’t realise paypal wouldn’t cover me.
November 17, 2009 at 11:25 am #74695To0THBRU5HParticipantThat is quite cheeky of Ebay to offer that buyer protection but then to say it will only apply if they can actually retrieve the funds. I never realised that 😯
November 17, 2009 at 12:35 pm #74696XDCiNSANEParticipantI too was scammed recently, I thought I bought a pair of GHDs for G/Fs birthday only to find out I bought fake ones from China (which is probabaly where they are made anyhoos)
I used Paypal and would advise you never to use these twits for anything other than Ebay. They just didnt want to know.. until I spoke to my bank who I have to admit couldnt do enough for me, they were superb.
To cut a long story short, I had to write a letter to the bank to say I was unwilling to pay for the goods, they sent this onto VISA who have since contacted Paypal, they have shit themselves and all of a sudden are acting to get my money back..Takes 10 minutes to clone a website, GHD advised they had shut down 750 fake sites alone this year, oh and I received the actual goods, and compared to the originals I bought her e FROM ghd.. they are identical to every detail.. I think its just a case of chinese chap on conveyer belt going “one for me, 2 for GHD” .. I reckon they are the originals, but because the serial number doesnt exist on the GHD system, they say they are fake..
anyhoos if anyone wants a pair of LTD Edition Purple inc travel hairdryer for there girlfriend (or themselves) .. send me a PM 🙂

Ahh but you see that’s what got me. I had an issue with something I brought ages ago via ebay never turning up. Those funds got refunded back to me no prob. I think the issue here is tht it’s a website other than ebay using paypal as the payment method. That’s when you have to watch out.
November 18, 2009 at 10:13 am #74698To0THBRU5HParticipantCan you not track down the website owner and kill them?
November 18, 2009 at 12:32 pm #74699XDCiNSANEParticipantIn my case, they dissapeared before I knew of the issues
Paypal, would never use them again, unless its for ebay as they only seem to be able to help then
lessons learnt I guess
