    Consoles!

although just bought Civ IV for the PC, and will probs buy Civ V on PC when it comes out 24th September.

Strategy games on PC all the way
FPS on the PS3 all the way.

Anyone here who even slightly considers PC gaming to be dying some sort of death, just doesn’t play PC games online.

lol, you’re right i’m not currently playing any games dues to pc dying a death and i’m not suggesting that pc gaming is dead, just wanted to get a feel for how many on here are now more inclined to play on consoles over pc’s.

Once the builders have finished here (hopefully due to start soon) i’ll be buying myself a new pc and possibly an xbox. My conundrum is do i buy a reasonably heavy duty pc to play the latest titles (with me it will be BFBC2 and BF3) and have the 360 as a media/gaming centre or do i get myself a decent pc to do photo/video editing and an xbox for gaming ?

If the majority of the guys on here are gaming on an xbox then it would make sense for me to move over to that platform so that i can continue to enjoy the banter i used to have when we all played the same game.

I may just end up getting a kick arse pc then 6 months down the line getting myself an xbox so that i have all avenues covered! 😉

I think all mediums have their strengths and weaknesses.

PC gaming is not dead. However, it’s not a popular as it once was due the endless upgrade route to ensure you can play the latest titles at decent resolutions and frame rates.

Whilst PC’s are not just about gaming I still think there’s a place for them in every home. Will this be the case in the next 5 years? time will tell but in all honestly I think the notion and the nostagia we all hold for PC’s will soon be replaced by something else that more practical. The current generation of Smartphones for browsing the internet, email, msm etc can do everything which up until a few years ago people relied on PC to do. People at moment just dont have that sort of spare money and have to make choices where they spend their moeny.

Consoles at the moment try to emulate PC’s to a point and there is a degree of overlap. However I think until the next generation consoles arrive in the next few years they will never truely have the complete flexibility a reasonable PC has which is why, for the time being, PC’s are around to stay.

    The big selling point for Consoles are, they are an inexpensive option to play the latest games because the games have to be written to work on the standardised hardware platforms including their limitations. If you want to play a game, you simply turn on the power, open the cd drawer, insert game and play. It’s the convenience, the small footprint and it’s price that means it’s accessable to a wider target audience.It’s a no brainer for developers and publishers;

    1. Standardised Platform means the development variables are reduced due to not have to write code 4 or 5 different versions of operating system
    2. Standarised Hardware means they do not have to attempt to develope around 100’s of different hardware items and drivers.
    3. Points 1 & 2 introduce ecomonies of scale which really gets the attention of Developers and Publishers because it reduces their bottom line to get a product to market whilst increasing profits.

I personally don’t have £800 – £1000 to throw at a PC to play the latest titles. Unfortunately, we’re all older have wives, kids, mortgages and other commitents before even being able to consider a luxury item like a new PC so inevitabley the console is the tradeoff hence the wide appeal.

    Just my 2 cents.

Agree with pretty much everything there Lammie, it would be common sense in many respects to go the console type route for games (although I maintain I’ve spent less on my pc over the last 6 or 7 years than any console player). If it was actually a cheaper option for me to go for a console, I would if they allowed a proper control system for FPS online, and that old argument is seriously all it would take for me to consider the switch. I doubt I could do it cheaper atm though, but a common platform without the limitations of a control pad, would interest me. They would also have to radically overhaul their console matching system, allow use of dedicated servers, and allow me totally unrestricted movement in terms of where I chose to play a game online.

Anyway, the argument for and against consoles etc will continue, but I think it’s irrelevant. I don’t have a clue on the exact numbers, but MMORGs alone must rival console share of the online market, so I seriously doubt comments like PC gaming is less popular than a few years ago. I would agree that console online gaming is probably growing at a faster rate than PC gaming atm, but both are surely growing, and consoles must still be playing catch up? Even if that’s not completely accurate, it’s the perception from my own personal PC gaming perch.

My previous comment in this thread was also a little bare, but the point is that the “XDC” perception that PC gaming is dying, fostered while us PC gamers drifted away from these forums towards more active groups over the years following BF2 (myself included), is a nonsense, and anyone would see that by getting online and involved.

Are the consoles any good as media streaming devices, if so which one is better ? Would i be better off giving consideration to a dedicated streaming unit like the mede8er – http://www.mede8er.eu/ ?

I’d love to be online playing some games but my main gaming rig is A) old and B) dead (well it turns on but then the screen goes black and it becomes unresponsive) and my other pc is too old (athlon xp2200), i’m currently using my laptop which is just about capable of running medal of honour or possibly BF1942 as it has an nvidia GEforce go7300 gpu (no idea if it’s good or not) and a duo T5500 CPU!!!

I’m having some building work done over the next few months, including a rear extension and a complete makeover of the house so won’t have much time to play games as i’m in the process of stripping all the walls and boxing away anything that may get in the way; including pc’s etc.

Once that is completed i intend to get a new pc as part of my 40th birthday present (November 23rd for anyone interested in making a donation ;)) and hopefully get myself online to have a game with the old crew.

I use more of the PS3’s non gaming features than gaming – the streaming is totally ace, and since it plays Blue Ray, DVD (upscaler), USB, streaming, iplayer, freeview (with £20 add on), has an easily upgradeable HD (even I managed to install a 640GB drive!)… basically it is awesome for media.

Wow… it does all the basic things that my PC can do. Amazing!

Yes at a fraction of the cost and size! Plus its all in one neatr lil package, no installing this that and teh other etc etc

I agree with Lammie on this

PS3 is better for streaming/watching BR, but Xbox is better for gaming.. you’ll have to get both, at a quarter of the price of a PC 🙂

How much were the Xbox and PS3 on release? I seem to remember them costing over 300, possibly 350? You can get a PC for that, and I did. I’ll accept that generally they’re more expensive, but you can do PCs on the cheap as well.

How much is just a single totr gfx card alone when its released every 6 months? Over £350 .. You can get a 360 for £99 and have done for some time, cant get a cpu for that ha

    Woah there… unfair.

Sure if you buy the latest GFX card release you will pay that… but I have been into PC gaming for years and never been that stupid.

Most game makers know that they need to cater to a market with less money than the elite overclocking fanboys…. I bought my PC over 3 years ago… spent about 150 quid on a GFX card last year… that’s it.

Offset against that… I don’t need to spend 40 quid whenever a new game comes out…

I get to use mouse / keyboard combo…

I get to play with wolf and Matt in TS rather than a bunch of teenage pricks… (OK – that is pushing it… Matt and wolf are pretty bad too.. but still probably better than those pre pubes.)

I actually get a CHOICE to upgrade. FFS – XBOX is frickin old technology. You wanna upgrade? You have to wait for its 6 year development cycle and then pay another full set up cost again.

Oh… and by having a moderately OK PC it lets me edit my home videos / do music stuff quickly as a bonus.

    No contest sucker!

Already knocked this flawed argument out of the park and cant be arsed with it again so I’ll just copy and paste although I will add you can choose who to hear and play with online except for that shit MW2 game not to mention if you want to play with your mates on here you either have to find a decent server or pay for you’re own.. which means even more cost!

People moaning about having to pay to play on an Xbox bores me and its flawed, I guarantee I have spent nothing like what a PC user pays to play online, I paid best part of £200 for console, game and Xbox Live.. now put that against the £350 I paid for a single GFX card.. and well thats all I have to say, I’ve not even touched the case, CPU, Motherboard, Game, Memory, peripherals, HDD, Coolers, Monitor etc etc etc which I will have to upgrade in a year so it will play the next best game that comes out, I’m older and past wasting money I dont really have buying upgrade after upgrade after upgrade like I used too, Thats more than likely why online gaming on PC is probably free to play, and if you think about it, its not really free if your paying to play on an XDC server, to which I did in the past and you probably do now, that was a tenner a month to be exact along with other members, now that works out at .. £120 a year to play a game online, thats ONE(ish) game only I might add.. and I’m sure you have to pay to play EVE and WOW.. not that I ever have so could be wrong

So I’m not accepting any lame argument about having to pay £40 a year to game online considering the above

Oh and £40 a game.. you watch too many adverts mate 😉 I think PC owners pay less for games as they are ALL rolling around in money you just spent upgrading your hardware 😆

for me PC gaming will always be better than it is on consoles. i think that this is mainly because PC games (ones that havent been ported from consoles) dont tend to treat their customers like morons. you dont get the stupid “do not turn off you machine or press rest while the game is saving” well no shit sherlock!!

secondly PC gaming will never die, social gaming has put more people in front of pcs than ever before. stupid games on facebook get more people playing than most of the big AAA releases.

another major factor is that so long as we have developers like Valve, blizzard and co who produce some of, if not the best games of any platform/genre then PC gaming will not die. these guys continue to provide support for player made content, the mod community that works on the SDK of the source/half life engine has produced some of the best games. and without PC games there wouldnt be counter strike, alien swarm, portal.

i agree that pc gaming isnt the cheapest of options and there are times that i dont want to sit at my PC and play games. having a bunch of mates round for a few drinks and messing around on the consoles is great fun, but the depth of most console games i feel are less in depth than a lot of PC games. its the little things in a game which make it stand out, and the advantage of having a keyboard as a control mechanism means that you have an enormous advantage over consoles. the ability to have 1 button set to do one function in a game, the ability to alter the control config as you see fit, these little things that the PC has means that for me it will always be the platform of choice.
the pc also has so many other roles, it can utilise multiple monitor support, play a game on 1 screen, have IRC and a web browser running as well as running multiple TS clients, and having the ability to switch to these at will without having to close something down.

there are console games which are excellent, and are worthy of being amongst the best games ever, zelda, uncharted, metal gear solid, gears of war, all of these games are great fun and really well made and designed games. for this reason i also have a 360 and a wii as i can play these great games that appear on these platforms.

so, is PC gaming dead? no, its just changed. will it die? i very much doubt it.
