quick question for any of the smarter geeks among us.
What is the best graphics card for laptops currently on the market?
as in the best for gaming and or video editing
in fact a good laptop that I can easily downgrade to XP is also on the cards
    15″ or 17″

Check Aleinware or the Dell XPS

I am getting an Alienware when Insane buys my rig. The Geforce TM is the best mobile graphics doodie

Hmmm – I churn this out with every laptop query…. but here goes.

Why buy from Alienware? You pay a huge premium for some dubious aesthetics and a brand name. I have heard a lot of bad things about their customer service also.

Consider buying from a cheaper name who can probably give you similar specs.

The US dollar is poor compared to the pound so it makes a lot of sense to buy your laptop from the states like I did… theres no import tax to pay, just VAT. Very high spec laptops custom built your preference.

Not sure how the economics work out with the euro – but I suspect there will still be savings to be made.

I actually picked up a real nice unit by HP called pavillion 9800 or something like that. 17″ blue Ray 320 gig hd (dual sata) 3gig ram, intel dual core 2.4 ghz proccessor, Gforce 8600 (500bladibla meg mem onboard) with Vista Home premium all the usual trimmings that come with the latest high spec machines webcam, built in mic, wifi etc . Sounds nice yeah?….
The HP bios only allowed me to diagnose the HD’s or ram for errors. No amount of snooping with other software from a CD boot would show up the actual physical HD’s . Most systems now dont even come with install disks. Just one stupid feking image on a seperate partition. Couldnt format the disk because it wouldnt see it outside vista. Couldnt format the disk inside vista as it had the operating system on. In short I couldnt downgrade the damned thing and pretty soon most models will be the same (microsoftcunts) unless you want to go to windows 2000. Windows 2000 anyone?? pffff
A last resort would have been to physically remove the drives from the laptop then format and copy a bootable partition onto it. Seems a bit complicated + I only had it 2 days and would be taking a bit of a risk ( I think)

Anyway, In short, I took it back today.
Best make this point clearer: I want a good spec comp but I DONT WANT VISTA! 😉

Well if you get it custom made you can choose what OS you want… indeed you can opt to have it without an OS.

Agree… very annoying when manufacturers try to get away without giving you the disks… most of the specialist/ good ones dont do so…. most of the high street sellers and big brands… not so good.
