Here’s my dilemma, what do you reckon ?
Situation:
Everytime I try to play BF2, my cpu hits about 80+ degrees and my PC restarts/hangs/crashes after about a minute. I play pro evo – it get’s to about 50, Oblivion, about 55, but BF2 just sends it soaring
All my fans are working, also cleaned the thermal compound off the cpu/heatsink and put new stuff on, also today bought Antec silver compound and put that on, still the same.
I’ve tried underclocking my cpu using clockgen as my m/b won’t allow an underclock via bios. Underclocking works fine in windows, but the minute I run any game my PC crashes
I currently have an old 478 P4 2.4ghz, AGP graphics, IDE hdd, old style 400W PSU
So, here are my options1 – Splash the cash and get a AMD x2 3800, X1800XT, Nforce4 m/b + new case + stronger PSU and SATA II hdd, TOTAL = £650
2 – Stash the cash and rip the side of the case and get a serious cooling system: BF2 Fan
3 – Forget BF2, I suck anyway
4 – Play Ogame, only requires a P2 + internet
5 – Instead of spending £650 on a PC upgrade buy a Xbox360, get some games and leave the rest to get a Wii when they come outMay 26, 2006 at 9:45 pm #25707TurksMeisterParticipantWhen I was having said problems, I sold the parts, and bought this pc off one of the hussars – Its a mesh pc with another couple of years of tech support so whenever i get issues I get a little man to come round for free and fix it – had 2 visits already, which would have cost over £100… bought pc for £450… Happyness all round 🙂
I would say spend it if you can afford it.

May 27, 2006 at 12:27 am #25710sebgrosParticipantI didnt vote, but dont give up up m8! It has been some time since we didnt play together but try to get that rig play BF2… the argos fan must be a bit too much but sometimes it tkaes what it takes so go for it!!!!!!
plus its only 34.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 27, 2006 at 6:43 am #25711xdc the docParticipantYeah good idea from Turks.. we are idiots for chasing after the cutting edge technology when stuff a few months old sells so cheap. Buy second hand if you are a bit strapped for cash..Dont rely on the XBOX for your gaming needs! PC is way superior!
Oh… and come play Ogame with us in Uni 5 – its quite diverting 😀
May 27, 2006 at 7:19 am #25712MugworthParticipantWell I have a socket 478 P4 2.8ghz and it runs very cool and I just have the standard intel heatsink and fan on it lol.
I cannot afford to upgrade for a while though 🙁

Damn, and a new Medusa 5.1 headset, so that’s about £700
Think I know what’s happened to my headset and why the mic not working no more and I’m missing the right surround speaker in it – caught my cat chewing the mic bit when I went into the room, plus he’d dragged the thing of the table and onto the groundI hear what you all say bout splashing the cash, but I spent £650 to get me the Dell 24″ only two months ago, so an struggling to justify another £700 just to be able to play BF2.If only Pro Evo was crashing my PC too, then the decision would very clear, I can’t go without a dosage of Pro Evo !
Maybe I should setup a donation website towards my BF2 rig, and for everybody that donates I can either send a picture of what component they helped contributed to, or a screenshot of a BF2 kill for each donation ?
May 27, 2006 at 9:47 am #25714XDCNeonSamuraiParticipantDutch, I’d go get myself one of the AS Rock Mobo’s for the 939 chip that supports both AGP and PCI-E. They cost about £50, plus £130 for a reasonable CPU and you’ll have a working PC for less than £200 that you can upgrade later.
May 27, 2006 at 9:52 am #25715XDCErratic-SpaceParticipantCan anyone recommend a good MB? The PC I’m on started as a Fujitsu-Siemens one (crap I know). The only parts left are the MB and the memory. I’m pretty sure the MB isn’t that good either?
You can see the specs for my PC in my sig (yes I’m a bit of a show off lo). My graphics card is AGP if I remember correctly? Happy to pay what it costs say up to £200? Any ideas? Or would I be better off selling both the graphics card and MB and getting new ones of each?
Cheers

Excellent, thanks for that, wasn’t aware they made boards that can take both.
I found this for £42, plus can find the Athlon 64 x2 3800+ for about £190, plus I’ll need a better PSU, can get an Antec 550w for about £60, so total would be about £300 with packaging !! Winner, now let me inform my financial consultant! -
