ParticipantRight, I know its ages away but we are already thinking of X-Mas!! Depressing aint it!!
We are thinking of getting the kids a computer system each. We have a low budget of £250- £300 each.
Chloe wants a lap top. She dosnt game, just surfs and Reece likes his gaming and surfing and dosnt care if its a laptop, tower or looks like a boot just as long as it works!!
Can anyone throw any ideas our way and tell us what we could buy.
We aint looking for all singing all dancing systems, just bog basic stuff, something that the kids will enjoy.TA!!! 😀

ParticipantHmmm, doesn’t sound like much, but a quick search on Ebay shows you can get the following, and many like them:
FUJITSU E4010D LAPTOP for £249 + £25 postage buy it now.
Specs:15.1″ LCD DISPLAY
PROCESSOR PENTIUN-M 1.6GHZ
MEMORY 256MB
HARD DRIVE 60GB
DVD DRIVE
MODEM / LAN / WIFI
WINDOWS XPNot bad, although I would recommend buying a second hand laptop/PC from someone you know, or at least somewhere that’ll give you some kind of guarantee, even if it’s just the fact that you know where the person lives and you can throw the laptop through his windows if it’s not working !
as for PC, I’m sure Pharty will do you a deal you’ll be hard pressed to beat.

ParticipantFor a bog standard PC, maplins has this
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=barebones&doy=30m7&source=15
2ghz celeron barebones unit. Just needs memory and a hard drive. And probably a graphics card if you’re going to be gaming. Obviously it’s not a high end system, but it should run things from the BF Vietnam era fairly well (with a graphics card upgrade) and for £130 (plus £100 or so for memory, hard drive and second hand graphics card) it’s not too shabby 🙂

ParticipantCheck out the latest issue of CustomPC magazine at WH Smith, they have a very good article about building your own £250 PC:
COVER STORY
We all dream of owning a top-end PC, but the reality is that not everyone can afford one. So, for people with limited budgets, we wanted to find out just how low you can go and still get a decent PC. This is why we set ourselves the challenge of building three PCs for the measly sum of £250 each. We reckon you’ll be shocked by how good these budget rigs are. This is taken from their site, but obviously doesn’t have the full article. I remember browsing through this, and they had something like a AMD 64 3000+, 512mb ram, 80gb hdd and a Nvidia 6600GT.
Obviously this excludes a screen, but reckon you could get a decent 2nd hand monitor for £50 ! -
