DICE, the way you designed the assignments is somewhat baffling.
In my mind, these should represent goals that encourage people to play the game as it was intended, play it well and foster, in general, better skills. This is not the case with some of the Assignments.
Starting with the game type requirement; forcing people into not only participating in some game types, but winning, is just annoying. You are forcing people to potentially play a game type they have absolutely no interest in. It’s one thing to create a hurdle, but creating one that forces people to play outside their comfort zone is not a positive one.
If the game types you have created cannot stand on their own two feet, forcing people into them for the sake of in game unlocks will not cause those game types to become relevant and will only breed contemptment. At best, it will only be targeted towards the game type; at worst, it will be targeted toward the brand.
Onto the weapon usage requirements.
In particular, I am looking at the Assault requirement for UBL usage and the Engineer requirement for RPG kills. By now you, DICE, should be well aware of the stigma around “noob tubing” and launcher kills. Neither of which are considered skillful kills, in most cases, and a large part of the gaming community looks down on abusers of these weapons as sort of in-game trolls. In a very quick stroke you have shown you do not care about this issue and want to see more people running around as if they are playing Rocket Arena. This is just a flat out disconnect from your fan base. Instead of putting in skillful challenges, you are encouraging bad game play that will only make the current landscape worse than it currently is in regards to these types of weapons.
Replacing the Assault requirement with “Kills on Enemies Behind Destructible Cover” and Engineers with “Vehicles Kills” would have allowed you to still promote these weapons, but in a more positive and truly useful way as you are promoting smart use of secondary weapons rather than primary use of secondary weapons.
For Recon, the knife kill requirement isn’t as bad, and I see what you are doing here, but this is a bad way to encourage Recons to get close to the action where many of their weapons do not support this type of play, or worse, you are encouraging snipers to hunt each other down which means you are encouraging the Recons to focus even less than the current match in play. Replacing this with completing objective oriented goals would have been better as you would have encouraged Recons to smartly tell when a particular MCOM or Flag is unprotected and moving in to do whatever deed is necessary.
I really hope that future assignments do more to foster smart, respectable game play.

The recon section of his argument is also a poor attempt at stating they should be encouraged to get forward or do more for their team, rather than working on their K/D ratios by sitting miles away from any danger.
One thing is true though, they could do more with assignments.

The gametype whine is also rather pathetic because in reality it rather expands the gamers experience even if it isnt your cup of tea. Although I’d have to admit that Team Deathmatch would have been better than squad DM as its pretty bloody hard to win at the best of timesDecember 30, 2011 at 12:54 pm #81553BlackadderParticipantI agree with the first part of this but not the last part.
I actually found that I managed to complete the L96 assignment without doing anything particular for it – because it doesn’t force you to be recon when getting the headshots or knife takedowns. The squad deathmatch requirement is just stupid and forces people to play a stupid game mode.
The game mode becomes even more stupid when you realise that even if you kill someone on an opposing squad, if they are revived the kill is removed again, thus encouraging teams of medic trains. To be honest though, my biggest issue with the BF3 unlocks is the weapon/vehicle kill progression – that to unlock accessories for specific items you have to get kills with that item. Thus the people who do well are rewarded with items that will help them do better and the people who are struggling will struggle even more.
With the other progressions (kit-based progression and the level progression) you can gain unlocks by getting points for completing objectives, performing support actions (repairs, revives, resupplies, spots etc.), or for getting kills, which means that players who aren’t so handy in direct combat can still progress within the game.
