Hiya all, i’m sure i laready posted this but it seems to have disappeared!!

My bro-in-laws pc seems to have a virus/trojan on it, it shuts itself off after a few minutes and i’ve tried as much as i can to sort it for him.
I’ve tried starting in safe mode, doing system restore and running his antivirus/anti adware proggies but all to no avail, sadly he hasn’t updated them so i’m not sure how old the definitions are for the respective progs.
Is there anything else i can try ? Is there anything within msconfig that would allow me to override explorer (where i think the prob lies) so that he can perhaps access the net (uses AOL) and download any updates

The message he gets is along the lines of explorer.exe has been corrupted by win32 trojan.dropper (not sure of the exact message but he says its along those lines)……..any help is much appreciated

    ta 😀

A bog standard way would be to boot from the windows XP cd, and reformat… thats always fun!

what AV software is he using?
once you get the AV updated you may not be able to delete the files as they may be write protected, in that case make a note of the files and restart your comp in safe mode then manually locate em and delete em or run the AV again. Also before doing all that I would disable system restore 😉

    yup, disabled system restore…………

managed to get him online to update his av etc……he was using his sons username within XP and thats where the pc kept shutting down, got him to switch to the administrator account which is his own and the pc seemed stable enough to go online etc.

I got him to read out the error message to me though i don’t think its a microsoft error box but more likely a spyware type popup!!

System Security centre alert…….possible spyware infection system security centre has blocked the program……explorer.exe is possibly infected with win32.trojan.dropper………..name explorer.exe………..publisher microsoft corp

We managed to do a scan with spybot and avg and it seemed to find a shit load of stuff but he thinks the disconnection problem is still there, he had to go to work so we didn’t get to try it any more but will have another look tomorrow. 🙄

    Slight aside….

Over Christmas I was called in to “just take a look at…” friends PC’s.

Incident #1: All docs, favourites etc gone completely. Worked out that IE7 installer had either crashed or been interrupted (did you realised it renames your user folder to “Temp” while installing?). Weird.

Incident #2: Message about spyware, click here to buy an antispyware product…..Soon determined no virus scanner installed FFS!!! AVG found 78 of them. Spybot etc found soo much spyware, including the one asking for money…

    Incident#3: Wifi problems (sigh….)

    Incident #4: Can’t remember…..they all turn into a blur…..

Sometimes its really annoying being the “techie-friend” 😀
