I made a post a bit like this one last year and got an encouraging response, so I figure lets try it again and see what happens. Everyone knows already that current activity in XDC is disappointing, but I think we turned a small corner this past year with a lot more of us in touch again compared to 2009, and we’ve had some great nights during the past 12 months, with BF2, BC2, TF2, and COH providing the main highlights. The hope this year though was that impetus we generated towards the end of 2009 would give us enough lift to get into the BC2 scene more than we did. Unfortunately, despite some of the new guys this year taking the initiative in getting us a server, we stalled a bit during the summer, but I want to try to put us back on track.
I’ve got a few ideas floating around my head as to how to go about this, but things will be a whole lot easier if I get support from within our current membership, and rather than get bogged down with ifs and but’s right now, I want to appeal for this help. First and foremost we need to coordinate our presence online, and get together more than we do at the moment. If we could even just encourage a couple of the guys who’re playing BC2 online by themselves to use TS, for example, as well as obviously the rest of us using it as much as possible, we should be able to form a regular XDC squad, and this would be a fantastic starting point.
With the release of Vietnam this weekend, it’s the perfect time for getting back together, as I imagine a good number of us will be getting it. I’ll have to wait until Monday before I can, and hope my connection problems sort themselves out asap before I can join this drive properly, but I’ll be about online as much as possible, and at least act as a point of contact for anyone looking for a game.
This is actually the thinking behind the survey thread I posted recently, as I want to see how many of us are active online but, in particular, who’s not using Steam or TS. No matter how self defeating I think this might be, I don’t want to force either system down anyone’s throat as a main point of contact, so instead I’ll come on board and use whatever your preferred system is, whether that be XFire, MSN, or simply in game friend lists. I also want to see where any activity is, and join in if possible.
Obviously my focus will remain on the main games I enjoy, and I expect nothing more from anyone else here, but it’s rare for people to stick to one game exclusively these days, and I’d like to provide a link between as many games and genres as possible across XDC membership. IRC is the best tool for this, and it’s a shame we failed to make the most of the drive this year to resurrect #xdcuk, but in it’s absence I want to see whether I can perform a similar function. It’s probably already doomed to failure, but it’s all about forming an accurate picture of the state of XDC at the end of the day.
So anyway, I’ve got my own ideas here, and I’ll proceed with them, but could the rest of you give me any ideas you have yourselves regarding how we can get things going again properly? I suppose a key question it would be helpful to answer is what everyone wants to get out of XDC as well? For me it’s all about finding likeminded guys online for the games I’m into, and sometimes it feels like I’m making a big assumption here that this is similar motivation for others here?
same motivation here matt, cracking bfbc2 last nihgt with doc made me remember what I had missed. I have moved to London in a house with my mates so I do alot more going out/ playing the xbox on the projector screen than I used to! My computer is creaking though, I worked out that I have been upgrading the same base rig for 9 years (although all that’s left of the original is the speakers and floppy drive!).
Obviously, I’m one of these new guys. I joined XDC specifically to get some regular guys to play BFBC2 with. Since being here, I’ve had some good times in other games, TF2, CoH, Alien Swarm even. Nothing has changed in that respect, I’m here to play games with a regular group of people and co-ordinate my efforts with voice comms in order to get more from games, rather than playing lone wolf in them.
I don’t mind installing software required to be in contact with the clan, have it start on windows startup, meaning if there is a game brewing, an IRC shout or whatever could go out.
I am now back from Christmas holidays and raring to go 🙂 Had some suprisingly awesome nights of BC2 while at my brothers over the last week with Queeks and Stalker mostly, so hoping for a lot more now I’m back on my own PC. My brother’s got the game now, as obviously has Maniac, and I had a brief game with Jar before departing as well. With Paddy back tomorrow that should see us fielding a full strength XDC squad most nights, or at the very least regular pairs. TS is the place to be of course, or IRC, or Steam, but if you don’t use any of them, reply to my survey thread and tell me how best to get in touch.
Great effort on this so far guys, and just wanted to say thanks. At the weekend I think we had Queeks, Jar, Maniac, Wolf, Doc, Stalker, Streff, Space, Viper, and myself all on TS, and almost all of us on the same team at one point, but we certainly kept up a 4 man XDC squad for the majority of the day on Saturday. I missed Sunday because of the football, but we had a 4 man squad last night for a few hours, and I’m hoping for more of the same during the week.
Anyone else who wants to join in, keep an eye on Steam for when people are playing, and/or jump on TS which is where we’ll normally be. Even if TS is empty or there are people sitting in the AFK channel, be patient, as there’ll always be someone thinking about a game, and feel free to fire out a few invites over steam messenger if you’re bored.
Aye, give it a go Nom, admitedly, it’s a frikking annoyingly buggy game, but it give you the opportunity to catch up with XDC again.
On another note, I’ve redownloaded RO and will be giving that another try . 😀
