I’m looking for a 32″ LCD TV to replace my god-i-hope-it-dies-soon 25″ Sony Trinitron. Anyone got any recomendations, or even manufacturers or models to avoid? There’s so many of the bloody things out there now, ranging in price enormously, that I’m worried about picking a crap one.
Most important to me is picture quality. I guess HD ready would be inevitable, but I don’t plan on getting an HD source anytime soon. I – well, my wife – don’t want it bigger than 32″, but I could probably talk her round to an extra five inches if the price was right. (Bit of deja-vue there…)
Appreciate any tips.
December 28, 2007 at 9:11 am #63929MugworthParticipantI went looking at LCD tvs with my dad recently and went with one of the panasonic Vera tv’s as they are well put together and from the other panasonic stuff he has bought, thought it should be good.
it was a 32″ one he got which does 1366×768 I think and has built in digi tuner, 2x HDMI inputs, 1xPC input, 2xSCART and then your usual coax for video and sound and outputs to send the sound to an amp.
I am hearing that Plasma tvs offer better picture quality though, but you have to get them recalibrated after a year and then every 5 years or something to maintain optimum picture quality.
Also note that these tv’s really show themselfs when playing DVD’s or a high res input source, std analogue tv looks crap on these, worse than crt tv. digi tuner tv is a bit better but you can still tell. But good quality DVD’s look fantastic on it.
The one he got says it is HD ready and the HDMI sockects support the HDCP protocol copy protection thingy. but apparently proper hd is 720p or 1080p? which I believe is 13xx x 720 and 16xx x 1080?
Some ideas for you.

There’s an interesting article http://www.which.co.uk/reports_and_campaigns/audio_visual/reports/television/watching/lcd_and_plasma_tvs/lcd_plasma_tvs_essential_guide_574_103930_9.jsp which gives you some of the pro’s and cons of LCD vs Plasma.
December 28, 2007 at 12:10 pm #63932XDC wild egg tamerParticipanti remember reading somewhere that plasma is a better choice if you’re sticking with a SD signal but LCD are better suited to HD…………me, i have a 36″ toshiba CRT and until that fecker dies a death i’m not planning on an upgrade, that should give time for the next gen TV’s to be released.
December 28, 2007 at 1:20 pm #63933xdc the docParticipantMy advixe…. use this opportunity to throw tv as a concept out the window. I aint had a tv for about 6 years now… best decision I ever made. still watch dvds etc …but don’t have the mind numbing soul sucking despair of handing my life over to the people in control.
your wife might not like your new philosophy though 😈

That said, I do actually have a new woman………

December 28, 2007 at 11:31 pm #63936LensmanParticipantThanks for the replies, guys. Looks like there is no clear winner in the plasma vs LCD debate, which seems to say to me that it is largely irrelevent – if they are that close then it really does not enter into the equation.
I’ll keep reading the links you’ve posted and see if it sheds any light on good manufacturers and models.
Unfortunately I think I have to keep the wife – alimony would mean I would not be able to afford a new telly anyway, so I’ll put up with the ball & chain for a bit longer yet! (Only kidding, dear, if you’re reading this 🙂 )

I have Sky+, and so don’t have this problem. Watch what I want, when I want.

whats he gonna watch the DVD’s on doc? can’t keep lugging the PC into the front room or crowd round a laptop to watch a movie. 🙂
for what it’s worth Plasma seems to be better for the larger screens at the moment (50″ +), although more money is being thrown at LCD development so Plasma is what it is. A little birdie (that may work for Canon) told me that Toshiba and Canon have the next generation LCD ready to go which will blow Plasma away so LCD will ultimately win.
Anyway for 32″ I would get an LCD definitely but like you say there’s not a lot in it. (apart from weight Plasmas weigh a ton)
December 30, 2007 at 9:30 pm #63938XDC wild egg tamerParticipantcould always wait for laser rear projection tvs to go live………….like conventional rear projection but uses primary coloured lasers instead of a lamp and filters to beam the image to the screen, very detailed picture so i’ve read.
December 31, 2007 at 4:03 pm #63939XDCsPUNKerParticipantgot a 40″ Samsung LCD that I’m currently using as a monitor. I’m really happy with it. Didnt go for a plasma as although they may appear brighter they weigh a ton and have a tendancy to break after a year or 2 apparently

Hah! Thats what they want you to think! You are still being exposed to advertisers drivel… and no doubt spending more time watching the vacuous nonsense in between the sales pitches than is good for you.
Im not immune… I have just watched the whole of desperate houswives through a boxed set the GF got for her birthday. Even though I felt dirty and stupid watching it I could feel myself being sucked in.
If I had a TV in the house I would watch it more than is healthy – fact. its just too damn insidious in the way it pulls you in. Thats why I had to make the tough decision to get rid of the thing altogether. Turn back! Before its too late! Its poison I tells ya!
As for you Judge – 24″ monitor and media centre in the living room… job done.

That’s exactly why I watch everything on Sky+. I simply skip over the adverts. If a program starts at 8pm, I often deliberately don’t start watching it for about 10 minutes simply so I can skip the ads.

Well your’re forgiven, simply due to the totty value of DH. 😉
I actually watch very little TV, and bugger all “trash”. Reality TV is something I hate with a vengeance. Can’t be arsed with any of the soaps.
But CBeebies is a sanity saver of you’ve got kids.
December 31, 2007 at 6:17 pm #63942AlzirKeymasterI’m by no means an expert but I read a review of lcd’s and plasma screens about a year ago and the verdict was to go for LCD, as theorectically they’ll last longer.
